DVD's with different cuts/versions of the movie?

The 2 that come to mind are Brazil: Criterion Collection and the upcoming Dawn of the Dead: Ultimate Edition. I believe each of these has 3 versions of the movie (Theatrical version, director's cut, etc.). Was curious to know if there were any others available...

RyoHazuki 07-20-04 04:43 AM

T2: UE

Alien Quad. has 4 different movies with alternate cuts.

NitroJMS 07-20-04 08:53 AM

Kate & Leopold and The Abyss each have two cuts.

The Leopard, the DVD includes the full length Italian language version, and also includes the shorter U.S. version with English language. Criterion probably wanted to be able to present Burt Lancaster's voice on the English version (he's dubbed into Italian on that version) but since the lengths of the two versions aren't the same they presumably couldn't just include two language tracks as not everything on the longer version was dubbed into English. Also the Italian is presented at about 2.2:1 aspect ratio, as if prepared for a 70mm presentation; the U. S. version is 2.35:1 from a 35mm print.

My Darling Clementine
The Gold Rush

The Infidel 07-20-04 10:13 AM

Legend with Tom Cruise. Has the original theatrical release with Tangerine Dream's score, and Ridley Scott's director's cut with a totally different orchestral score by Jerry Goldsmith.

Brazil only has two cuts (though it has three discs). But it's still an amazing set.

The American cut of 'Brazil', with one line not found *anywhere* on the Criterion disc, is still not available in any way. Apparently, the bare-bones disc is actually the proper director's cut found on the Criterion disc, it's just mislabelled.

X-Men (and 1.5) has two cuts available via "seemless" branching.

the old Manhunter limited edition had two cuts, one which was not-quite the theatrical and one which was not-quite the director's cut.

the old Halloween limited edition had the theatrical and the TV versions.

Strangers on a Train, both the old disc and the upcoming new one, British cut and American cut (though the new discs lists "American cut" and "preview cut", I think)

I believe 'Crash' had the R-rated and unrated.

Mike Lowrey 07-20-04 12:23 PM

Highlander: Endgame has an R-rated version on one disc and the theatrical "earlier" cut on the other disc.

All four movies in the Alien Quadrilogy
Die Hard
Identity
E.T.
Monty Python's The Meaning of Life

Criterion's "Indiscretion of an American Wife/Terminal Station." From Criterion's Web site:

De Sica’s version, Terminal Station, was screened at a length of one-and-a-half hours, but after disappointing previews, Selznick severely re-edited it and changed the title to Indiscretion of an American Wife without De Sica’s permission. The Criterion Collection is proud to present both versions of this controversial release.

ThatGuamGuy 07-20-04 01:26 PM

Supergirl had a limited edition with two cuts

Criterion's "Scenes From a Marriage" had both the US theatrical and the original miniseries length, I think.

Several 'Mystery Science Theater' discs have both the original "uncut" movie and the episode-versions of the movie (in addition to the characters talking, there are also major cuts to the movies).

Bad(der) Santa

asianxcore 07-20-04 01:31 PM

Not exactly. The disc has an icon that will pop up to take you to deleted footage in non-anamorphic letterbox. This is far from seamless, and this does not actually constitute a new "cut" of the film.

MEJHarrison 07-20-04 02:00 PM

American Wedding Unrated has both the unrated and rated version of the film.

Newfrd 07-20-04 02:02 PM

The Killers

Criterion has 3 versions of The Killers: Siodmak's 1946 version, Siegel's 1964 version and Tarkovsky's 1956 student film version

yes you are correct

Joe Molotov 07-20-04 11:02 PM

The Abyss has the theatrical cut and the director's cut that actually causes the ending to make sense.

Giles 07-20-04 11:22 PM

James Cameron's Titanic docu: Ghosts of the Abyss contains the theatrical IMAX cut and an expanded 90min cut of the film.

I put seamless in quotes *because* it's not quite seamless, but I did think that you could pick an option which showed all the scenes edited in, it was just an awkward jump into and out of the new scenes.

But it's been a while since I watched it, so you're probably right.

Bad(der) Santa
No, the question was for single releases with multiple cuts, not multiple cuts over multiple releases.

Two of the myriad of 'Army of Darkness' releases had both the theatrical and the (improperly restored) director's cut ... the two-disc limited edition and the "Boomstick" edition. [Correct me if I'm wrong on that latter; I forget which it is, aside from it has two discs, because I have the R3.]

Rypro 525 07-21-04 11:14 AM

butterfly effect has both the theatrical and directors cut.

MEJHarrison 07-21-04 11:29 AM

Since I threw out American Wedding, I'll try to redeem some of my credibility by mentioning that Criterion's The Lower Depths contains Renoir's 1936 version of the film in addition to Kurosawa's 1957 version of the movie.

majorjoe23 07-21-04 11:36 AM

Badder Santa doesn't have both cuts of the film, only the unrated one.

Rocky Horror Picture Show has at least two different versions on it.

fryinpan1 07-21-04 11:44 AM

There's Something More About Mary - Includes original theatrical release and extended version with 15 minutes of never-before-seen restored footage.

Correct - Rocky Horror also contains the "Superheros" version of the film originally unavailable as an American release.

Doesn't Suicide Kings have multiple versions on it too?

Also this may not count specifically, but Clue has the 3 different endind and the "home video release ending where all 3 are cobbled together into one. On the DVD you can choose an ending or let the ending be randomly selected. Kinda fun. :D

Also, there's the hidden cut that has the film in black and white until Frankenfurter appears.

If we're stretching the question to include multiple movies (as opposed to multiple versions of single movies, which is, I believe, the question which was intended), the 'Scarface' deluxe gift set has both the original version (not available any other way) and the 1980s version.

Though of another legitimate one: 'Dracula'. Both the initial release and the recent "Monster Legacy Collection" have had both the English *and* Spanish versions of the movie. (Apparently, there is legitimate difference between the two, it's not just the language, they actually shot different takes.)

So, so far, the winners are 'Dawn of the Dead', 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day' (Ultimate edition), and 'Rocky Horror Picture Show', all with three cuts apiece? [And one of those 'Rocky's isn't actually any different, cut wise, just lacks color for a while.]

Come on, guys, there's just *gotta* be a movie with four or more cuts out there ... there's just gotta! [I know Gilliam said there have been a total of five cuts of Brazil, for instance, but only two are available.]

Actually, the Dracula example is not a lot more legitimate than the Scarface example. With Dracula, they used different casts and a different director. What the have in common is the same script (though translated into Spanish for the Spanish version), the same set, and filmed at the same time.

But I wouldn't characterize this as a "different cut" of the same movie. Different versions, I guess, but not different cut...

It has two alternate endings but thats it. You can't view the alternate endings in the movie, they have to be viewed in the special features.

Well, the English language Dracula also features an alternate score that contains a scream not included in the non-scored cut.

That's really streching it though.

In the Mondo Cane Box Set you get:

- US version of Mondo Cane/ Director's cut of Mondo Cane
- US Version of 'Africa: Blood and Guts'/Director's Cut 'Addio Afrika' (alternate Italina language title)
- US version of 'Goodbye Uncle Tom/'Director's cut 'Addio Zio Tom" (alternate Italian language title).

Mikey 07-21-04 11:29 PM

On an interesting note, I believe the Widescreen version of Porkys has less male nudity than the fullscreen version does. Therefore, you could say that the widescreen version is of a different cut. :)

The Exister 07-22-04 07:57 AM

Peckinpah's The Osterman Weekend contains the director's "rough cut" on a second disc.

NavinJohnson 07-22-04 08:52 AM
