Would you be ok with DVD's coming in CD cases?
As I look at my shelf space I think damn if DVD's came in CD cases I'd have allot more room on my shelfs. You could fit allot more movies in a smaller space. The shelfs I use now have 5 shelfs on them if DVD's came in Cd's case I could fit like 10 shelfs in the same space.
Also one more plus is no more loose disc. When you close a CD case it pretty much will push on the top of the CD. I've gotten lose Cd's before but they were not marked because the CD had no room to move inside the CD case. Now the bad thing is this may seem dumb but I'm sure others feel this way. With the bigger case you feel like you're getting more for you're money. It also may be hard to fit all the extras list on the back of a CD case and it will be harder to read the spic's of a disc. What is you're option on this matter? I was thinking of this when I saw some pictures of peoples DVD's and they got like two walls full of DVD's. I'm running out of space myself and wish sometimes damn if DVD's came in CD cases I could fit twice as many DVD's in the same space. |
You can't do this. CD cases put too much pressure on the inner hub of the DVD. That's why we have the soft plastic inner hub of DVD cases.
If space is an issue for you, look into Thinpaks. |

No way would I want CD jewel cases. I remember back in the day when Columbia and Universal would put out some of their discs this way, and hated having to look at the damn jewel case of Babe on my shelf. You drop it, it breaks. Besides, the current system allows for the proper ratio to display the poster cover art correctly (when the studios decides to use them).

No way... I like different formats to be packaged differently. Good thing Xbox game cases are green :)

NO NO NO NO

NooooooooooooOOOOoooooOOOOOooooOOOOOoooooOOOooooo....!

No, damn you, no!!!

Nope, wouldn't like it at all. Don't even like them for CD's and software. I think they should be banished immediately. You should be banned for even having such a thought ;)
Seriously, jewel cases suck. Yeah, they take up less room, but they're more fragile. They might seem to provide adequate protection, but they don't. Just opening them enough times causes stress on the plastic hinges which will eventually snap. If you've ever stepped on one, the splinters go everywhere inside the case, damaging even the underside with the smaller pieces. On a flipper or dual sided disc, the top side would be toast. There's also not a lot of room for nice cover art on a jewel case, and it's harder to find a movie with the small spine (speaking from experience trying to find a CD out of 700 of them.) I have a decent sized VCD collection, but have removed them from my shelves and into the closet because I don't like how the jewel cases look next to my DVD keep cases. |

No, DVD cases are more superior to the jewel cases plus they look cooler
|
I'm not too sure it would matter to me. The extra space would be great. But I like the way dvd's look. I guess that in the end if it happened I'd be a little dissappointed at first, but I'd get over it pretty quickly. It would be kinda like when cd's first came out. They used to come in this big cardboard box that was really cool looking. Really showed off the cover art. Then they ditched them and I was pissed cause the package got smaller and it seemed like I wasnt' getting as much. I got over it.

Personally, I would LOVE to have CD-jewel case sized cases made of the same plastic as the DVD ThinPaks. (Hmm, I wonder if videogame cases for PS2, XBox would work) All this talk about "cover art" makes no sense to me because all you see 99.9% of the time is the spine.
I'm slowly converting my collection over to ThinPak cases. And it really helps the space issue. |
I'd hate it. I remember early in the days of DVDs seeing a large portion of Circuit City's stuff in large jewel cases, and the DivX stuff in CD-size jewel cases. Looked awful and cheap. And like others said -- jewel cases break. I hate them for my CDs as it is. At least I can put my CDs into sleeves and I don't have to worry about the discs being scratched. (I could probably do it for DVDs too, but I'd freak out about the scratch factor.)
I just think jewel cases look cheap. I hate seeing jewel cases everywhere. DVD cases don't bug me like that. (no, not even snappers.) |
Well now that we already have the type of cases we have now, no. However, I would have preferred CD-jewel cases from the start (for the extra space). Cover art has never been an important factor to me. Packaging is only an issue for box sets for me.

Originally posted by Red Dog Packaging is only an issue for box sets for me. However, I wished multi-disc TV season sets would come in the thinnest packaging possible. For example, the ST:DS9 and ST:VOY sets. Very thin packaging and they hold 7 discs. The DS9 sets are just a little over an inch thick. The big digi-paks, which I call gate-folds, like the ST:TNG sets are way too big. Even the 6-disc B5 sets are not too bad. At least they're uniform size (height and depth) with most other cases. |
Absolutely not... I hate it. But, unfortunately, it's an evil that I have to live with on 4 - to date - of my titles... Unless I want to make new covers (which I don't).
|
If you had asked me back at the format's launch, I would have been 100% behind this idea. That was one of my thoughts back in 1998-ish... basically "Damn, it would be great if these cases were thinner. Storage is going to be an issue."
But now... no way. I wouldn't support any sort of case change this far into the format. Hell, it appears that Warner has finally given up the snapper, so we finally (for the first time) have everyone releasing in a consistent case. |
DVDs in CD cases is censorship.

add another no for me.
|
I wouldn't want CD cases but for space saving purposes I wouldn't mind those thin little cases that Firefly came in at all ..I love those
