Top Ten Favorite DVD's of 2004 (so far).

I have to admit I haven't bought a lot of DVD's this year, since I have been seeing a lot of movies in the theatre and/or renting DVD's from Netflix and Nicheflix. I was just curious, with the half of the year nearly upon us what new 2004 DVD's do you consider your favourites (and why).

Mine:

- Master and Commander
- Das Boot - Miniseries version
- Dawn of the Dead - (great commentary, can't wait for the deluxe edition!)
- Kill Bill Vol. 1 (Reg. 2 uncut edition - the extra blood: woohoo!)
- Disney's 'On the Frontline'

Freaks & Geeks, without a doubt.

Even the regular version kicks butt!

The more I watch it, the more I realize there's not much "good" television around any more.

Not a single list is complete without LA FINESTRA DI FRONTE (r2)....now we can begin!!

1. 21 Grams (not the dvd presentation....the film itself)

2. Under the Sun (great cinematography)

3. NOVO- (r2)- Excellent film, highly unusual.

4. The Damned- Spectacular Visconti

5. Mystic River- Sean Penn deserved it ALL!!

6. Time of the Wolf (r2)- SUPERB!!

7. So weit die Füße tragen (As Far As My Feet Will Carry Me)-(r2)- Though not superb I enjoyed every second of it!! A different look at the history of German POV's.

8. Ni Pour Ni Contre (Not for or Against)- (r2)- Superb Neo Noir. Klapisch at its best!!

9. The Leopard- Visconti's timeless classic. If you have not heard or seen this film yet...then you should have.

10. Lilya 4-Ever- (r2) though it came out at the very end of December last year this film deserves to be mentioned. It has it ALL.

11. The Dreamers- Already in my hands. Bertolucci...yes, it is that good.

12. TRISTAN- (r2)- A film that probably only I liked!!

13. La Belle Noiseuse- sadly again a better r2 version.

14. Swimming Pool- good, not great.

15. Underground- finally a r1 eiditon of this superb film!

16. OSAMA-.....and we live in the 21 century.

17. Three of hearts- interesting film.

18. Casomai- (r2)- The Italians are in a state of Renaissance again.

19. Rules of the Game- should have been way higher on this list.

20. Under the Tuscan Sun-.....(smile)....even i imagined for a sec "what if"....

Pro-B

In no particular order....
1. "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" ...one of my favorite movies of all time in all its restored glory.
2. "Trainspotting" CE ...just a great, fun movie that has a replay value of infinity.
3. "Cop Land" DC ...haven't seen in awhile and looking forward to an extended cut of a pretty well acted movie with a great cast.
4. "Big Fish" ...instantly taken by this movie, though I only started it.
5. "Kill Bill vol. 1" R1 and R2 Japan ...either way you slice it, it's "Kill Bill", it's Quentin Tarantino, and it's fine cinema.
6. "Freaks and Geeks: The Complete Series" ...haven't seen most eps, heard it was good, read all the great reviews and looking forward to enjoying the quirky tv that is this series.
7. "The Magdalene Sisters" ...haven't seen, but heard this was very good and very powerful and looking forward to.
8. "Dawn of the Dead" Divimax ...my first foray into the "Dawn" and it was most enjoyable. Loved the remake to death. Looking forward the box set.
9. "Wonderland" ...really enjoyed the movie and actually ran through most of the special features when I only had the single disc and found very interesting. I now have 2nd disc with docu and looking forward to that as well.
10. "Schindler's List" ...one of my memorable experiences, kinda hard to come to 10.

1. Simpsons Season 4 - Arguably the best Simpsons season ever. Conan O'Brien and Jon Lovitz contributing to the audio commentaries were a great touch.
2. Futurama Volume 3 - Another volume that represents a show at its creative peak. Great extras all around.
3. Master and Commander: Collector's Edition - It's up there with Saving Private Ryan as THE audio reference disc. Informative documentaries make up for the lack of a commentary.
4. Schindler's List - Spielberg's finest film finally arrives with great video/audio. Although the extras are slightly disappointing, the documentary about Schindler's Jews was great.
5. Open Range - A suprisingly good Costner movie with some great audio.

I will stick with what I have purchased.. Appears it reaches to 9 for 2004 titles. Not exactly in what movies I thought were the best order. I enjoyed them all alot. Look forward to picking up Freaks, Goodfellas, Eternal Sunshine, and more in the upcoming months.

This is hard... I have gotten too many...but here is an attempt on limiting to ten based on how I like the film.

Delicatessen (1991) (R2)
Paris, Texas (1984) (R2)
Oldboy (2003) (R3)
Code Unknown (2000)
Cyclo (1995)
Persona (1966)
Fanny and Alexander (1982) (R2)
Ikiru (1952)
Leopard (1963)
Ed Wood (1994) (R2)
Cheers

A few more than ten, but oh well. I can't make up my mind!!

Big Fish - great movie, great presentation, nice documentary

Broken Silence - unfortunately this is a very much overlooked set of five amazing documentaries about the Holocaust that came out on the same day as Schindler's List and was executive produced by Spielberg

The Chaplin Collection Vol. 2 - just amazing - the care that went into these reissues is very obvious

Chappelle's Show season 1 - funniest show on TV

City of God - only one extra, but the documentary is so good that I don't care

Dracula Legacy Collection, Frankenstein Legacy Collection, Wolf Man Legacy Collection - lots of great (and some not so great) films with nice extras for a really low price - perfect

Force of Evil - Unfortunately no extras, but it has a surprisingly great a/v presentation and it's nice to finally have this on DVD

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly 2 disc set - one of the best films of all time finally with an expansive special edition

Ikiru - not much left to say about Criterion and their recent treatment of Kurosawa except that this is probably the best set yet

The Last Samurai - one of the best big budget films of the last few years with a nice 2 disc set

Open Range - nice to see Kostner make another great western, and the extras are very in depth as well

Pickup On South Street - I hadn't seen this noir before I bought it, but I'm glad I did - a classic and very brutal noir and an always excellent Criterion presentation

Reno 911! The Complete First Season - Yet another fantastic Comedy Central show and yet another fantastic Comedy Central show presentation on DVD

Schindler's List - Waited a long time to get this on DVD and it was worth it - only one real extra but that documentary is worth more than any number of "making of" features would be

The Simpsons Season 4 - best season of a comedy show ever, period

A couple that would make it if I had purchased them already are Kurosawa's "The Lower Depths" and "Stray Dog" but I just haven't had the funds yet. Hopefully this summer at some point. Plus season 4 of South Park comes out tomorrow and I'm sure that will qualify as well.

Here's all the 2004 releases I've purchased so far:

Tomorrow Land
Mickey Mouse in Living Color II
The Chronological Donald I
On The Front Lines
Alice in Wonderland: Masterpiece Edition
Kill Bill Vol. 1
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932/1941 double feature)
Around the World in 80 Days (1956 2-disc SE)
My Fair Lady: 2-disc SE
American Graffiti: Drive-In Pack
Smokey and the Bandit Trilogy
Looney Tunes: Back in Action (widescreen)
Charley Bowers 2-disc set
The Pink Panther Collection
Mutiny on the Bounty (1935)
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Here's my top 10 picks:

On the Front Lines (overall excellent)

Tomorrow Land (overall excellent)

Looney Tunes: Back in Action (flawless video/ BEST 5.1 track I've heard, "sleeper" great movie)

The Pink Panther Collection (excellent remasters, 5.1 remixes, extras)

Charley Bowers (cool "forgotten" animation and comedies!)

Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde double feature (The 1932 version is one of the greatest horror films, superb restoration!)

Around the World in 80 Days (excellent remaster/restoration, the BEST 5.1 track of a pre-1960's film I've ever heard, great extras. My pick for best catalog movie DVD of 2004)

Alice in Wonderland: ME (Flawless a/v, nice supplements)

The Chronological Donald Vol. 1 (superb quality, funny cartoons)

The Return of the King (Good a/v, but ranked in this list mainly for the A+ qualty of the movie itself. The extras are generally mediocre, but the video is susprisingly great for a 201 min. film on a DVD-9.)

Kill Bill's DVD was good, but the video is a little too filtered... the 5.1 track is great, though. My Fair Lady's SE has wonderful video/audio, plus excellent supplements. However, I chose to leave it off the top 10 list due to it being more or less a duplicate of the laserdisc set.
