Moral Dillema
Ok, so I have a small moral dillema. I'm taking a German Film class and I have to pick a couple of films and write a long essay on them. I was thinking of doing my essay on the BRD Trilogy. So I thought this would be a great excuse to purchase the Criterion box set. However, I don't have much money (I'm a college stduent, of course). I do, however, have someone paying for all of my "education-related materials" for each term.
I figured maybe I could classify the BRD Trilogy as something needed for classes and roll it in with my textbook purchases and hand the bill to the person paying for my stuff. They don't see an itemized, bill, just the total. My thinking is that this term I have less books to purchase than normal (about $80 for books vs normally $200 - $250). So even with the box set the bill will still be lower than normal.
Another possibility is that maybe I just roll a portion of the cost in with the bill. Like maybe I pay half out of pocket and the other half goes into my textbook bill.
I could rent the movies, but it might be tough tracking down copies and I'm also not much of a renter. I prefer to do blind buys.
What does everyone think?

I should clarify. First off this is the last term that this person is paying for my stuff. After that it's all student loans.
Second, if I bought it NEXT month I could afford it, but the class will be over then (it's only 4 weeks). I already used up all my DVD money this month on the DDD 20% off deal. I also don't have any credit card to charge it to (I used my debit card, and my bank account is now empty).

If you don't have the BRD trilogy available to watch already, and you genuinely will be using them for your course, I don't see how the DVDs aren't education-related materials. Personally I say go for it.

The fact that you're asking this question shows that you already know that what you're trying to pull off is sketchy. But I'd do it. Well, not really.. But it's a pretty smooth move.

I'd go for it, but then again, I have virtually no moral barometer, so what do I know.

Since I'm not too good with acronyms (or German films by the look of it), could someone please tell me what the BRD Trilogy is?

Oh thank god! I thought I was the only one who didn't know.

Threads that are titled "Moral Dilemma" would be more accurately titled "Please council me to do the wrong thing."
Talk to your professor. Ask him about cheap options that can be rented or borrowed from the library. Tell him you can't afford to buy the titles on his list just to watch once.
