Other than the booklet/episode guide that came with the larger box, I suspect they're the same set. Hell, you'd think that when they rereleased the set in a proper box they could've at least designed the inner box with a properly labelled spine. But nooooo...

And while we're on the subject, I'm wonderign why the box has gone up in price? Up til recently it retailed for around $89. But now Amazon and Buy.com have it priced over $100. Are they getting that rare?

Well, funny you should mention that. Because I wasn't really thrilled with paying ~$100 for that set, I decided to go a different route. It's called Ebay. I went on Ebay and did a search and found several auctions for the set, many very reasonably priced.

I made a few bids, I bid a max of $50. The first auction I had it for $35, until apparently the last few minutes when I was out bid and it went for something like $52 or so.

I rebid on another auction with the same $50 max bid and originally had it for $42, but another bidder came in and knocked my bid up to $46. But I won it in the end. So I got the set for about half that of full retail and it was a new "sealed" set.

The only problem I have with the set is the double-sided discs. Very hard to handle without getting finger prints on them. First time I flipped the first disc, I got lock-up during the opening credits sequence because of a finger smudge around the inner ring.

I'd wished they just would have made the set a 9-disc deal or something. However I think they did it this way (6-disc) because they had so much found "lost footage" that it would have been cost prehibitive to make a 9-10 set. The 3-part pilot movie has 34 minutes of lost footage in of itself. And as it is already it clocks in at 138 minutes.

I'm a little disspointed in the sound. Going by the "demo" shown on that one Howie Long Radio Shack commercial, I was expecting a little better stereo separation and more surround effects, but for the most part the 5.1 track sounds somewhat monural. But then again, we are talking a 1978-9 show here.

But as for nostaligia reasons...I find the show entertaining. It's great to be able to pop in a DVD and hear the Cylons talk in their robotic voice whenever I want to.

I bought this set to get pumped up and geared up for the new Sci-Fi Channel series. I'm hoping they hold off on the mini-series DVD until they release the eventual first season of the show. It's be a long wait, but for convenience sake, it'd be much cooler if they'd just include it on the season set.

IIRC, I got my set for $79 right around when it came out. That was Circuit City's price, matched at Best Buy 'cuz CC was sold out. And that was for the original, helmet-box set.
