The CE is better for the transfer and soundtrack.

The CC has some great extras not available on the CE.

Depends on what you like.

Isn't there an audio commentry on the CC? Don't know if that will make it worth while picking up the CC though.

I think the Criterion cover is hideous......

I, as a previous owner of the Criterion, would stick with the MGM Special Edition. It has great features, superior audio and sound, and isn't quite the hassle to locate.

The Criterion is presented in a not so great looking non-anamorphic print, a lousy 2.0 soundtrack, and mostly text based features other than the commentary and deleted scenes.

I know the Criterion includes the original theatrical sound, but it really isn't worth it for this title.

Agreed 110%...

Which is more or less what I meant in the thread linked above from two years ago...

I have to disagree with this - especially since when I bought my Criterion copy, it had a sticker stating that it was a director approved print - so while the transfer may not be as shiny looking as the one on the MGM disc, the Criterion disc looks more like the film really should (not to mention, it has the original soundtrack)

All that says to me is that when Demme saw the disc transfer, it was the best his film could look - at the time. Was it not a Laserdisc transfer that was then ported to DVD? I imagine that Demme would be quite happy with the way it looks on the MGM disc.

This does not seem to be a case of obvious meddling with a transfer's look or color, as has been observed with the Halloween Divimax release and MGM's Robocop DVDs. It might be; I don't know. The reason I bring up these particular films is that they also had Director-approved transfers - as Criterion laserdiscs.

The Picture is surely better on the MGM over the CC, but there were changes made in the sound mix on the MGM that I personally dislike. On the original mix on Laserdisc and the CC DVD when Foster is being led through the asylum to meet Hopkins for the first time, there was a lowend ambience that was very unsettling,on the MGM this was all but ripped out of the new mix completely! MGM did the samething with Robocop when they remixed it,gutted all the lowend ambience out of key scenes. Its for this reason I hold on to both, CC and MGM for both films.
