In the entire life of VHS I bought about 30 movies. I've racked up over 400 DVDs since 1999........

I had like 12 VHS tapes.

I have around 400 DVD's.

Of course I'm 22, and I just started collecting a few years ago - money didn't mean the same thing...

Never bought VHS, just rented from Blockbuster. I started buying lasers in '91 and averaged about a hundred a year till '97 when DVD's started taking over. I miss those days, taking a drive up to Boston from New York every once in a while just to browse through Laser Craze. Oh, the memories.

I've been a film freak since 5 years old...(1968) and had about 800 tapes prior to weeding out due to dvd. I didnt start buying dvds until around 1999. dvd didnt have to come along for me to discover euro-horror...Argento and Fulci films were hittin' tape about the same time from AB. I still have about 160 tapes.....since they are still not on dvd.

missed out on the whole LD thing. the parents died about that time and interest in film took a back seat for a few years.

My mom would get us disney tapes, a few other kid movie and recorded the wonderful world of disney off tv. We probably had about 50 tapes and maybe 100 including stuff recorded from tv.
Last vhs brought was pokeman the first movie in 2000. In through we had a dvd player.

I have vhs of things from tv such as my favorvite soap last count 200 tapes with commericals edited out. I also have tapes of shows where I edited out commericals even on shows I now have on dvd. Its a sickness, I am sure.

My dvd collection is upgrades to disney dvds. Other movies I love even some I need to see. Last count was 250 not counting all my tv sets.

I definitely have more movies on the DVD format than I ever did on VHS. I have about 350 on DVD and had maybe 40-50 bought VHS movies (that's including 4 different versions of the original Star Wars trilogy). The only ones I cared to buy were Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and the Disney animated movies. I picked up the Star Trek original crew movies after they were less than $20 a pop. Various others were impulse buys. Just like most people I taped off of TV for the bulk of the VHS collection (probably 200 max).

I have around 2000 VHS tapes and over 1000 DVDs. I was buying the tapes used at pawn shops and Blockbuster for $3-5. Back then I was more into the movie than the presentation.

I still watch the occational tape on one of the smaller TVs in the house. I pull out the fireplace video tape every Christmas and play it on the big widescreen TV just for laughs.

My VHS collection consisted of the following:
* All the Star Trek movies through Generations
* About a dozen of the Star Trek: TOS individual episodes
* The original Star Wars movies (in both P&S and Widescreen)
* The Disney animateds
* Both King Kongs (1933 & 1976)
* Ben-Hur (in a rare Anniversary Widescreen edition)

That's it!

I started collecting DVD's in November 1998 and I now own over 400. I *have* to purchase at least two a week no matter what!!

I think he means...Did you buy movies (collect) before there was DVD?

I got into movie buying when DVD came out. I had hardly any VHS and never owned an LD. But DVD came out my freshman year of college, so I really never had the money (worked very little during high school) before then.

I have a couple of hundred grey-market VHSes and about 50 tapes (each with 3-4 movies at EP speed) of movies I rented and taped; but I stopped doing that years ago. I started buying LDs in '92, and amassed more than 200.

I bought some VHS, but not much. Maybe 80 in total. I am approaching nearly ten times that in DVDs.

For me, the problem was the same as cassette vs CD. I never really wanted to invest heavily in a tape-based medium because longevity was an issue.

I had a handful of VHS tapes over the years. Probably only 30-40 total, then got rid of a good majority. I buy movies a lot lot more often now that everything is on DVD. Woo for no rewinding

Bought a few VHS is the past. But as soon as DVD came out with widescreen, I've been buying DVDs ever since.

A year ago, I had over 1000 VHS tapes that I collected over a 15 year period. Then I bought a DVD player, and that changed everything. I now have only about 200 VHS's left and that's only because those aren't yet out on DVD. I can't bring myself to watch the old cropped tapes, but, being a collector of films, I also can't bring myself to discard/sell a tape until I have the DVD.

It's still a thrill to pull out that crappy tape and sell it on eBay when a title is announced on DVD! Sometimes I get more $ for the tape than the DVD costs. I guess there are still people out there buying VHS. (more common titles get sold the used record store for about $1, or sent to the thrift shop)

Yes, oddly enough, I still prefer to buy most of my movies before DVDs were invented.

I had a fairly decent collection of VHS, from pre-recorded tapes to tapes with 3-4 shows taped from TV. I don't know how many tapes of each I had, but my friends always said that I should open my own video store. However, according to some here with around 1000+ tapes, I didn't have that many. I'd say more like perhaps 400 or so. And about half and half (pre-recorded and recorded from TV).

I then bought a S-VHS VCR in 1999 thinking that it would upscale the resolution of standard VHS, and of course it didn't. However in the meantime, I recoreded several movies off of satellite PPV in widescreen in S-VHS. The last show I recorded was the Band of Brothers series. I then got my DVD player along with a Flatscreen TV. I promptly disconnected my VCR and discarded my tapes when I saw how bad they looked on the Flatscreen, since Flatscreen technology enhances the flaws in the image quality. Of course it also enhances the quality of the image with regards to digital satellite and DVD.

I have nearly 300 DVD titles and would probably have more, but I try to refrain from buying non-anamorphic WS titles. There's several titles I'd like to have but I hold off until an anamorphic release is released. The recent Running Man was one such example.
