Hmm, is Disney finally getting it? 6 of 8 classic titles in O.A.R.

8 classic live-action titles have come to DVD from Disney, and 6 of them appear to be in the Original Aspect Ratio. Of course, I am not sure what the original ratio was for these films, but given Disney's track record, I wouldn't be surprised to find the two 1.33:1 titles were originally widescreen. I am also curious as to which aspect ratio is correct, for titles that were previously released by Anchor Bay.

The titles are:
  • Napoleon and Samantha - 1.85:1 (Anchor Bay's was 1.33:1/1.85:1)
  • Greyfriar's Bobby - 1.33:1 - IMDB lists this as 1.33:1
  • Never a Dull Moment - 1.75:1
  • The Cat From Outer Space - 1.75:1 (the Anchor Bay release was 1.66:1)
  • The North Avenue Irregulars - 1.85:1 (Anchor Bay had 1.33:1/1.66:1) - IMDB says 1.85:1 is correct
  • The Ugly Dachshund - 1.75:1
  • Hot Lead and Cold Feet - 1.85:1
  • No Deposit, No Return - 1.33:1 - There is no info on this at IMDB, but it was filmed in 1978, and AFAIK, it was released theatrically, so I assume it was probably widescreen.

EDIT: Since IMDB shows Greyfriar's Bobby as being in 1.33:1 (although they could be wrong,) that would be 7 out of 8 for Disney. I say good job, although jeers are still due for not releasing No Deposit, No Return in the O.A.R. (if it was in fact widescreen.)

Any word on The Black Hole? I'd love a 16x9 of that one.

Looks like there is a release coming 08/03/2004, although I can't find any aspect ratio information...

Good to hear, I just hope they keep the overture from the Anchor Bay disc.

Dammit!

Disney must have something against Don Knotts - Gus, Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, and now No Deposit, No Return are all Fullscreen hack-jobs. Looks like The Apple Dumpling Gang and Hot Lead and Cold Feet are the only ones so far to get proper respect.

From the File

dvdfile

...No one can hear you scream. Or laugh. On August 24th, Buena Vista Home entertainment will release a couple of cheesy but beloved old favorites, The Black Hole and the Lucky Charms-inspired Darby O'Gill and the Little People. Both will get remastered anamorphic widescreen transfers and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround tracks, their respective theatrical trailers, plus additional extras: a new making-of featurette on The Black Hole, ...Retail will list for $19.95 a pop.

Woulda made a nice Vista....

Here is the reply I got direct from "Disney". Maybe there is still hope for an anamorphic widescreen release but I am not very hopeful considering their past track record.
