Das Boot - Miniseries cut (5.1) audio question

In terms of the audio 5.1 remix, are both the original German and English presented in discrete surround sound, or is only one of the two presented as such?

The audio quality here, on the other hand, is not nearly as good as either the Director's Cut or Superbit editions. First of all, there's no DTS mix included here, so what you get is Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 in both English and the original German. This is not the same Dolby Digital mix that appears on the other editions. The 5.1 audio here was created from the original stereo tracks for this longer version, and the mix is much less atmospheric, taking significantly less advantage of the surround channels. Other than the occasional fill in the rear channels, this seems almost like a 2.0 Surround mix, with virtually all of the audio biased to the front portion of the soundstage. That's not necessarily bad - this audio is certainly better than the sound quality German TV viewers got during the original broadcasts - but it's not nearly as good as the other versions of this film on disc. It's not even close.

Yep, pretty much what the digitalbits said. Very weak 5.1 mix from the original stereo audio. Refer to the Superbit for the best sound.

Stuck the first disc into my DVD-ROM when I got it today and the mix sounded very flat. A little surround ambience, but not much.

However, I'm finding the mini-series cut to be quite different. Even some dialogue have been changed. I attribute that to being originally broadcast in West Germany in 1981.

I *still* prefer the Superbit. This is the kind of experience that really lends itself to a superior soundfield. It helps keep up the tense atmosphere of the subject matter.

Yeah, I'm happy with the Superbit version. The director's cut is good enough for me. I don't think I want to sit through 5 hours of content in the full version.

Now I'm a little torn. I was going to pick up the new miniseries cut but I'm a little hesitant after hearing this about the sound quality.

I might have to just get the Superbit now.
