What do you know about the Pitch Black DVD?
The Pitch Black Directors Cut DVD comes out this tuesday.
Some say the movie is a rip off of Alien
This movie made no money in the box office and I hate Vin Diesels acting.
Is this movie the prequel to Riddick? Would someone that watches this movie have a better understanding of Riddick?
Who is getting this DVD?
Is this a good movie?
Worth getting?

I liked the movie. very well done for such a low budget film.
It is the prequel to Riddick but im sure you wont need to see it to understand Riddick (Which from the trailers looks like an even worse version of Dune )
Why not rent it ?

I doubt anyone expected very much from Pitch Black in the first place, so a $40m domestic gross is alright for a low-budget action flick that cost $23m to make.
Riddick is the SEQUEL to Pitch Black as it takes place 5 years after the first movie.

Pitch Black is a good blind buy on DVD, IMO. I thought the movies was nicely done and told a good story. I don't see much of a rip-off of Aliens.
I'm not sure the character of Riddick is gonna be able to carry a movie on its own.

Is this a new transfer or the same as what was released before? I have Pitch Black Unrated with DTS so unless its a totally new print, there should be no use in upgrading.
BTW, I really enjoyed the movie.

There an animated film called Dark Fury which is meant to occur between Pitch Black and Riddick.

Either way, its not a good situation when the potential audience doesnt know in what order to see the films. Hopefully it will be cleared up before the films release.

I loved Pitch Black ..Its very underated
The Director's Cut is a better version of the movie.
I think the actual order goes: Butcher Bay (videogame)Prequil to Pitch Black, Dark Fury(anime), Chronicles of Riddick
I was very excited about Chronicles of Riddick until UNIVERSAL CHANGED THE R RATING TO PG-13 To make more money and ruin the original film!

Just to clear up the confusion.
The Chronicles of Riddick is DEFINATELY the sequel to Pitch Black.
THe young girl in Pitch black grows up and is older in the Chronicles of Riddick.
So the TRUE time line is like this...
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (Video Game)
This is a prequel to everything, it explains how and why Riddick get's his eyes 'shined' in more detail.
Pitch Black (The First Movie)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury ( Animated DVD) Which takes place after Pitch Black and Before Riddick
The Chronicles Of Riddick (The New Movie Coming Out)
There.
Also, I believe the new "Director's Cut of Pitch Black" is the same "Unrated Cut" that's been released for some time on DVD. I believe the transfer is the same, and there's really not much reason to double dip as the only difference is the artwork and some boring extras....
Here are the specs for the original 'Unrated Director's Cut" from amazon....
•Running Time : 109 minutes
•Commentary by director David Twohy and actors Vin Diesel and Cole Hauser
•Commentary by director David Twohy, producer Tom Engelman, and visual effects supervisor Peter Chiang
•Production notes
•Theatrical trailer(s)
•Unrated director's cut features 3 minutes of additional footage
•Making-of featurette (4.5 min.)
•Raveworld Pitch Black event
•Widescreen anamorphic format
Here are the specs for the new "Director's Cut Version"
•Running Time : 112 Minutes
• Commentary with Director David Twohy and Actors Vin Diesel and Cole Hauser
• Commentary with Director David Twohy, Producer Tom Engleman and Visual Effects Supervisor Peter Chiang
• A View Into The Dark
• New to this edition:
• An Introduction by David Twohy
• "The Chronicles of Riddick" Visual Encyclopedia
• The Game Is On
• Johns' Chase Log
• "Dark Fury: Advancing the Arc"
• Widescreen anamorphic format
It really doesn't look like much extra, and although the running times on amazon are different, amazon lists the same 109 running time for the Rated R version of Pitch black, so add the 3 minutes of additional footage and you have 112 minutes. It's the same cut of the movie and I heard the same transfer as well. Which is not a bad thing. I guess if you don't have Pitch Black, here's your chance. Just be careful you get the WIDESCREEN UNRATED DIRECTOR'S CUT, as there is also a WIDESCREEN RATED R version and FULLSCREEN UNRATED CUT, and FULLSCREEN RATED R VERSION. Seriously! Check out amazon. 4 Versions of the Pitchblack. then add the 2 old versions... 6 Different Releases for Pitch Black.... Talk about confusing the customers! Perhaps this wins most releases for a single DVD besides NIght of the living dead?

there's a lot of confusion about PB and CoR
CoR is the sequel to PB, and it was originaly planned as a trilogy, depending on how the first part of CoR does in cinemas.
the CoRark Fury is to bridge the gap between PB and CoR
loved PB but the trailer for CoR looks like a made-for-tv sci-fi cgi crap. Kind of reminds me of a mix of babylon 5 and dune for some reason. I do hope I'm wrong, hopefully there will be a good story, but I'm expecting to be disapointed.
btw, there was a short official comic some time ago on the pitchblack website showing some backstory about riddicks escape and eyes, pre-PB. Probably same story as in the made-by-movie video game
