QUOTE:
Universal has sent out a very nicely crafted book, approximately 35-40 glossy pages long and in full color. The outer cover and first couple of pages is stark black, with silver lettering, that says "Great Television on DVD is Universal. Universal Studios Home Video is Proud To Present Some of the Most Dynamic and Influential Television Shows of the Past 40 Years. The ShowsThat Defined Generations, Influenced Popular Culture and Set the Standard for Television's Most Groundbreaking Programming are Coming to DVD."

Yeah, but will the have the original music or some knock-off to save money? I know the hold up was for negotiating the music rights and that didn't look good since the music industry wanted big bucks.

That's my guess.

Does anyone really care that much of the music is changed?
The action and the dialouge is what made this show great. Even if there was no music (except the theme), I would still be happy with it. To hell with the music industry, I just want my Miami Vice!

Yes, I agree. The soundtrack was integral to that show, and I would not buy it without it.
Didn't the Freaks & Geeks set initially have similar rights issues? I wonder what the sales figures for that have been like. If it is selling well, it could be seen as proof that an investment in securing the original music would be well worth it, especially because I'd imagine Miami Vice has a much bigger following.

The music in miami vice was very important to the show,a lot more then other shows,i can't imagine watching the episode called smugglers blues with out the glen fry song to acompany it(glen fry was also in the episode as a drug smuggling pilot),and ditto for the other episodes, heck sometimes it was like a hour long music video lol, i really loved that show and will buy it on release day, unless the music is not on there because i will not buy it at all in that case

Miami Vice music
According to a comment by a vice fan on one of the MV forums, Universal already has got the world wide rights to the music. So going from this we're going to be lucky and get both the original music and show!!!!

Congratulations to the lawyer/s that got the music rights problem sorted out. It must have been a nightmare considering the number of songs that they used in the show's 5 year run...
Who's that in the background? Benico Tel Toro!!!
So many guest stars:
Julia Roberts
Wesley Snipes
Liam Neilson
Bruce Willis
loads more.

That will be a must buy.
I was lucky enough to watch them film part of a show once in Miami (boring but facinating at the same time). I really wanted to buy one of the prop ferrari body/vette undercarriage cars when the show ended but had no contacts.
I did get to sit in one at the film site though. Nice car. Have to find that picture.

Excellent news. With Philip Michael Thomas' relative obscurity since then, and Don Johnson's recent financial troubles, I'd be pretty disappointed if they both aren't heavily involved with these sets. Maybe there will be some Abel Ferrara and Rob Cohen director commentaries too.

Back in July of 2003 Universal publicly stated that:
"We understand your want and need for the release of Miami Vice on DVD format. However, as we have been attempting to make this possible, it has become nearly impossible due to music clearance/royalties involved in satisfying the artists/musicians.
This is a quote from Michael Denzel from Universal Entertainment (an e-mail that he sent to a Miami Vice fan site) back on 7/06/03.
