Fanny and Alexander: Criterion - coming?

Film Forum in NY is holding a Bergman retrospective. Fanny and Alexander is one of the films being shown. On the page, here: http://www.filmforum.com/films/ingmar.html#521
at the bottom, just above the showtimes, it states that the film is courtesy of Janus (Criterion's parent). IMDB has no info regarding Janus holding the rights, but apparently they do. A Criterion is probably not far off.

Much as I'd love a Criterion to happen, I don't think that's any indication - Janus has the distribution rights to many, many foreign and art house films, and has for many years. They may not even have home video rights - this was released on VHS by Embassy.

My heart stopped a bit when I saw the title of this thread, because "F & A" is one title I've been hoping for since the advent of DVD. The other is Jan Troell's magnificent "The Emigrants" from '72. Sigh.

I believe MGM holds the rights for F&A, but I wouldn't be surprised if Criterion got ahold of it.

JM at Criterion has stated that they hope to release it - which in JM-speak means there's a possibility.

in the UK Artificial Eye's DVD edition of the film is the complete mini series 5-hour cut of the film. so.... if you can do multi-region, I highly recommend buying the expanded cut of the film. Of course if indeed MGM does holds the rights, maybe there's a chance this version might get a stateside release.

Just got my UK edition (on 2 discs) the other day - best deal I could find was HMV - came to $25.63 total.

Well, here's hoping. A Janus release is often a good indicator that a Criterion DVD is coming.
