I don't mind when they come out, as long as they release them right the first time. Double dipping is my only complaint.

I think they should release them the following week after they are done showing them at theatres. I think 6 months is way to long specially since I dont really go to the threatre anymore because its to expensive.

I think there may be an issue here that nobody has yet to mention. Early DVD release dates may cut down on piracy.

I mean think about it. How many piracted versions of Star Wars on DVD are there? Why is that? Because official versions aren't out yet. If they were, no body would dare buy a piracted copy.

Also another thing, as some of you have mentioned that you no longer go to the theaters. I don't either. I haven't been to the theater since LOTR:TTT. I don't go because there's usually something on TV at 7 or 8pm that I want to watch instead, and I know that the DVD will be out 4-6 months later. And lately those 4-6 months seem to fly by, so waiting a few additional months is no big deal.

And thirdly, I read an on-line article a year or so ago that said that the theatrical release of a film is becoming more and more just a preview for the DVD. Think about that. What you're watching at the theater IS the bare-bones version. Besides, you even get to watch a bunch of trailers for up-coming movies. ;) But depending on the quality of the theater you go to, you may not get the full sound experience that you're more than likely to get at home. Plus at home you can pause the movie (to take a piss) and/or eat a steak or lobster dinner while you're watching it. You can't do that at the theater.

The only thing you really miss by seeing a movie in the theater is the audience reaction. Sometimes this is a good thing, sometimes this is a bad thing.

Now note that I haven't even touched on the "studios making money" bit. While that is one very true issue, I could care less. That's their whole purpose is it not? They are a business. Studios who don't make money close up or are bought out by other studios. Can we saw "Orion Pictures" anybody?

Sooner the better. I don't go to theaters anymore because of all the annoyances (people talking, babies crying, etc...) and the sooner I can see a movie I probably would like, the better (before some jerk spoils it for me).

I also think DVDs should be released (best version too) as soon as possible.

I agree Mike. Release the DVD of the movie the same day it comes out to theaters and let the public decide which one they want. That would eliminate piracy in every movie form.

There was an article about this in Video Business a few months ago.

Basically, the industry average has switched from just over 6 months to just under 5 months from theater to DVD. Why? A simple 'strike while the iron is hot' mentality. Get a version of the film priced to own in front of customers before they move on to the next best thing.

And, so far, the sales figures show that it's working.
