The good, the bad, & the ugly Extended Version

Doesn't really fit here, but I didn't really want to start a new thread in Movie talk so...
I believe I read that this is a prequel to - A Fistfull of Dollars and For A Few More Dollars. So would it be ok to see The Good, The Bad & The Ugly before the dollars movies or would it be best to see them in the release order.
Thanks.

I'm glad to see the "original" cut. But If they wanted to do that, then why not just do it for the italian cut. That would be the version Leone originally intended. Then they wouldn't have to do that horrible re-dub with the actors and re-do the effects for 5.1, because it sounds bad.

The restoration people were in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation, and the responses on this board are indicative of that. I for one am glad they made a new English version, because I like to hear Clint and Eli as opposed to Italian actors. This seems to be the best solution to the problems presented.

I bought the DVD on Tuesday when it was released and opened it to watch it yesterday.
I'm not happy with the packaging of this DVD. It's awkard, my disc 2 was loose and rattling inside the package. There's a security tag underneath the clear disk holder that is ugly and don't know how to get rid of.
I watched disc 2 first just to make sure it wasn't scratched.

The dubbing for the new scenes is horrible; Eli Wallach sounds like he's dying, and is clearly recorded in a tiny room, despite the fact that the scene is taking place outside. The sound in all the new scenes is horrible. Clint Eastwood fluctuates in and out of character (to be fair, though, there's one new one where it's eerie how good he sounds). Whoever dubbed Lee Van Cleef's line does the best dubbing in the new cut, better than the two actual original actors.
There's also at least one new scene which wasn't from the original Italian release (or, at least, it wasn't on the old DVD supplements, which claimed to be all the stuff cut from the Italian release), but rather from the "premeire" length, which also had the extended Tuco scene which couldn't be restored fully (but I'm sure that technology will catch up to that too, and someday we'll have an *even* longer version).
It just feels weird to me that 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly' is now longer than 'Once Upon A Time In The West'.

Good, the bad, and the ugly...problems?
Hey everyone,
I was just wondering if you guys have heard about the discs being defective. I'm having a hell of a time with the movie.
I bought it on Thursday and guess what I found when I got home? The set brought 2 special features discs. No movie. I went back to Best Buy to get it changed and so they tell me to go and bring another one so that they can open it and check. Guess hat? The next one I got had the same problem. The manager was so spooked we opened two more. Luckily they were okay and I took it home. Finally I pop it in and guess what? The bloody Special Features disc doesn't work! On the documentary, "Leone's West" it freezes up right around the part where Eli Wallach starts talking.
I'm going today to get it exchanged a second time. I hope I have better luck today. So far I've gotten bad and ugly. Maybe I can finally get the good!

I loved the expanded edition....regardless of the dubbing.

I'm glad they included the Italian track. I've always wanted to hear how this sounds and I wasn't disappointed.
The guy that dubbed Clint's voice actually sounds more evil than Angel Eyes (LoL)
Gotta hand it to Mickey Knox for trying to fool english-speaking crowds that many of the actors are saying their lines in different languages. I actually thought that Mario Brega said a lot of his lines in english.

I love the set, and the packaging is great. Why do some of you feel the need to take the paper off your DVDs? I always leave it on as it has info on it and usually looks nice. I guess it's the whole "if it can come off, remove it!" mentality. Anyway, no complaints here, I'm very happy to have both releases now.

Turning old mono movies into Dolby 5.1 surround mixes can be a disaster at times and this movie is a great example of that. I'm glad I kept the original DVD release. No way I will ever watch this DVD again except for the extras. It was interesting to see this version, but the Dolby remix sucks. I could never sit through it twice. It would have been nice if MGM could have added the new dialog and left the rest of the sound alone. Or at least exactly recreated the original sound effects. This was done with Vertigo and it has a very well done surround mix.

Just set your reciever to downmix the audio for you (i.e. instead of using 5.1 as the output have it output mono) . Should get you closer to what your looking for.

So how is this a problem? The original disc isn't OOP - you can still buy it if you want the old version.
Personally, I like the new version. Sure, I wish they could've matched things up better, and at times the surrounds sound forced and fake, but considering the production quality of the film and the conditions under which it was made, this looks and sounds amazing.
It's not startling like Once Upon a Time in the West is, where you can use it as a demo disc and people can't believe it's over 30 years old - but it looks and sounds damn good nonetheless.

Yeah, I had a problem with the specs page on the back as well. Except on my copy when I tried to remove it I ended up tearing a chunk of the back glossy stuff off. There's an air bubble elsewhere on the back as well, but I'm much more pissed about the tear.

Gonna bring it to my local BB and get a new one.

Well, personally, I think the packaging is pretty damn_cool... However, I too have that damn air bubble on the back after removing the promo paper from the box. Eh... No biggie. Other than that, no problems at all with the packaging... Of course, I haven't completely figured out where to place it on the shelf yet... I don't have another case anything like it.
Haven't gotten around to spinning it yet, maybe this evening...

My main problem with the packaging is that it's larger than even Digipaks, so it sticks out of the shelf - which means it'll find its way into a storage box much sooner than other titles just because it's so unsightly.
