That's some great artwork. I hope the Region 1 art is as nice.

I don't like the cover. To me, it seems like it might be giving part of the story away.

REL77 05-13-04 09:46 AM

I love the orignal movie poster cover, so I am sad to see it go, but change is always welcome

Tony Dvdfan 05-13-04 09:52 AM

I think its a great cover, though i do agree it gives a bit of the story away.

ThatGuamGuy 05-13-04 09:55 AM

I thought Frank Darabont recorded a commentary track for this?

The story I read was that Morgan Freeman recorded a commentary track for the original DVD release but Frank Darabont nixed it because he felt the movie should speak for itself. It seems unlikely he would do a complete about-face.

LasVegasMichael 05-13-04 10:06 AM

That's unfortunate, as I really enjoy commentaries. I will eventually pick this up when it hits R1. It will be interesting to see the cover art.

Personally, I always prefer the original one sheet over any new exclusive to DVD art, but that is just me.

Grizzly 05-13-04 10:11 AM

i'm pretty sure i've read interviews with Darabont where he said he'd do a commentary track for it..

anyway.. can't say i like the cover. the slipcase idea is nice but i don't think the tropical island thing works since it's only in the film for a minute. just doesn't feel like the film.

tsinbad 05-13-04 10:22 AM

This seems pretty cool...

notice the "Usage: DVD Package/Art Prints". Let's hope its for DVD package... although it might just be for an insert. Also reported on The Digital Bits.

Wow, if this is what a special edition is going to be then Warner Bros. just proved me wrong. Shawshank is one of my favorite movies and one of the first DVDs that I bought. I always said I would jump all over a special edition, but 1 documentary and some interviews are hardly worth the upgrade.

fumanstan 05-13-04 10:34 AM

Not a fan of any of that artwork.

Agreed. Also the audio and video on the current DVD is excellent, especially for an older DVD release. So all they are offering is 1 documentary, interviews and that ugly cover?

Was the previous release anamorphic?

I'd still be in if it was a substantial documentary. At least it's not a "featurette".

Yep, it was anamorphic and looks spectacular. Holds up well against the newest transfer out today (okay, not like Master & Commander ;)),, but you get the idea. The 5.1 audio track is also very good. But, like you said, a substantial documentary would be great. Will have to wait and see.

Deleted Scenes?

I want the deleted scenes of Red on the outside that they showed on Showtime, introduced by Darabont.

I keep meaning to start a thread about Showtime's deleted scenes, from films including the aforementioned Shawshank, L.A. Story, and Four Weddings and a Funeral. They also showed the deleted scenes from T2, but those have been put on the film's DVD once or twice now.

I'm not gonna get worked up about anything till this is officially announced.

Pelayu 05-13-04 04:13 PM

Great cover!

gutwrencher 05-13-04 04:27 PM

just reminds me how sad it is that isolated music scores seem un-important.

sataniko 05-13-04 04:35 PM

Great coverart

PopcornTreeCt 05-13-04 06:29 PM

Usually I'm all over different types of Cover Art but those 2 above do not fit the movie at all.

Coral 05-13-04 06:57 PM

The R2 covers look nice, but they just don't fit the feel of the film (even though they have some relevance to the story, and even spoil it a little).

QuikSilver 05-13-04 07:09 PM

I'm not a big fan of the coverart. It doesn't really represent the film as a whole. I wish they would use the original coverart of Tim Robbins lifting up his hands while in the rain. I have this poster hanging up in my room.

Grabastic 05-13-04 08:31 PM

let us take a peek at the WB meeting for deciding the new cover of The Shawshank Redemption DVD.....

"okay, so we've got to think up a cover for this movie that takes place inside a decrepit old prison in Maine. any suggestions?"

"how about a tropical beach?"

"BRILLIANT! Make it happen!"

RyoHazuki 05-13-04 08:39 PM

Yeah that cover art eats shmegma. So misleading.

"Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free. Visit the Bahamas and drink a Pina Colada."
