300 Spartans DVD - My impression

The last I heard (which was in a column by Barrie Maxwell at The Digital Bits), 300 Spartans was delayed due to that oft-used umbrella of a reason we've heard so often, "poor elements." A perfectly valid reason (the better these films can be made to look, the happier are we all, of course), but exactly how poor the elements have proven, what restoration is needed versus what restoration has been green-lighted by the studio, whether video restoration or film restoration (or both) are to be undertaken, or whether the studio is simply searching for better existing elements without any plans for restoration ... I have no idea, and in the absence of these details it's really anybody's guess just how long a delay this might be. But the release was reportedly "delayed," rather than canceled, so I continue to hope more news is forthcoming.
I just finished watching this DVD. Here are my impressions.

Fox must have found really good "elements" because the picture was really gorgeous, with nicely rendered colors & no evidence of dirt or scratches that I could see. The sound is 2.0 & it sounds just fine. The running time is about 5 minutes longer than is indicated on the back cover.

This is a good purchase for fans of this genre of film. Better IMHO than more modern efforts.

Hope I can buy it here in Singapore provided retailers bring it in.
One of my long time cherished movies back when I was a teen.

Someone refresh me. Is this the story of 300 Spartans holding off an army of thousands of Corinthians?

It is about the battle of Thermopylae were a mere 300 Spartans (the elite fighter of their day), and a few others, held off thousands of Perians at the pass of Thermopylae for a very long time before finally secuming.

I've never seen the film either, but if it's not accurate then it would be a blow to historical record.

As a matter of fact, I've never even heard of this film but I think I'll have to check it out now. I'm a sucker for history films.

Still waiting for the movie to be made based on Steven Pressfield's magnificent novel, Gates of Fire.

I wish Michael Mann would stop sitting on it as he has been for years and give it to someone else to direct. I don't think it's right for him anyway.

I'm also waiting patiently for the big brown truck myself. I had orderd this movie when it was to be released the first time and was highly disapointed to be delayed at that time, but if they delayed it to make it better, well then, I can live with that. My favorite line in the movie is " I will waste no more of my men, finish them with arrows " ....great line.

Yep, that's what I meant. Considering that I have a BA in History, I should know this.
