Price - a movie these days for two costs 20 bucks. Why should I spend 20 bucks for something I'll only see once, when I can spend 15 bucks and watch it several times. Hell, if I throw the disc away after viewing, I'm still 5 bucks ahead of the game.

Unlike drugs, alcohol, or tobaco, there's only minimal side effects, such as the urge to buy the most expensive A/V equipment you can afford (or in most cases w/ Americans, maximum credit allowed w/ multiple credit cards).

1. I love movies, but with the advent of the "superplex," hate going to the movies. Home viewing is all I have left.
2. I am a collector by nature. I collect books, cds, comic books, toys... the DVD is a natural extension for me.
3. At its price point today, I feel it is a better deal to buy a movie than to rent.

Repeatability. I'd prefer to collect something I will use many times rather than books that I will probably read only once. Nearly every book I've ever bought has been given to friends or family members after I read it.

The thing that largely separates film fans from the rest of the movie-viewing public is that they like to watch things more than once.
I buy DVDs not just to see them (I only buy movies or TV shows I have already viewed), but to have the potential to watch them... any time I want.
Plus, a lot of us are collectors and just like to own things we like, whether they be CDs, DVDs, video games, classic electric guitars, action figures, or '60s Corvettes.

It's plastic crack and Im addicted......
No really, I'm a collector by nature, books, comics, Magic the Gathering cards, DVDs....they can all be organized and collected and therefore must be (maybe Im a bit compulsive).
Im also a huge fan of movies and want to have a library of movies I enjoy. With the price of DVDs dropping and the price of Rentals rising, it makes more sense to buy any title I know I will watch more than once.

I am a big fan of movies, and I like having films I enjoy or good films around. It's nice not to have to go out and do stuff all the time on weekends, just to relax at home and watch a couple good films.

I love having all of my favorite movies on hand so I can watch them basically any time I want. I've always loved movies and liked to watch them over and over (believe it or not when I was about 8 years old I watched James and the Giant Peach at least twice a day, one time I watched it 4 times in one day
). I need something to spend my money on and can't find anything better than DVDs (although I've got to save my paychecks for the next month... going to buy my first home theater in a box soon
).

Because some movies I like to watch over and over... and they should not wear out.
I am getting more into the TV Series sets, almost as much or more than movies now.

I'm a movie fan, and DVD is the best format I can get my movies on. I collect them because they're cheap for what you get, don't take up too much room, you get a lot of mileage out of them (if you enjoy rewatching movies and extras, that is) and can be attractively displayed. I also love the convience of having my favorite films/tv shows right in my room to watch whenever I have the time.
I should probably note I do rent through Netflix, but mostly I buy.

Why, I love movies, I am a child of TV, old movies are my favorite, When I got the Legacy set it was like going to vist friends I had not seen in years. There is nothing better than thinking about a movie, pulling it off the shelf and watch it . There is almost nothing to watch on TV, and anything worth watching is being cancelled, so everybody can watch the swan, or some crap. I buy DVD's so I can watch what I want when I want.

I am probably one of the few people who started to collect and ended up getting rid a good portion of my DVDs because they are stuff I wouldn't watch again.... Like Big Fat Greek Wedding, Chocolat, etc, they have no replay value for me. And because of that, I find myself very reluctant to buying any DVDs these days.

personally, movies are one of my 3 main hobbies - books & music being the other 2. i indulge in movies the most, followed by CDs & books. when it comes to CDs, i like collecting the boxsets & i only buy books when Borders issues those great coupons in our local newspapers.
besides being passionate about the movies, the reason why i choose to buy rather than rent is because where i live, censorship is rampant. the government strongly believes that each & every citizen must be told what to watch & what not to watch - all in the name of national security

so every form of media/ entertainment is censored or must be cleared for public consumption for them to be considered legal.
being a film fan, i'm just unable to accept censorship & never have since the very first time i ever rented a movie only to find that it was butchered.
so i choose to buy my DVDs off the net or on the 2nd hand market. it's illegal where i live to actually own media that is not cleared by the censorship board but if they are for personal consumption, then the government closes one eye.

I buy movies that I like and will watch more than once. There are some fanatics out there who buy a dvd just to be buying a dvd. I would hate to be the type of collector who has piles of dvds unopened. That to me is a total waste.

1. i love watching movies.... it's the only time in my life where i don't have to worry about anything else, it keeps me calm & explore the magical world of movie magic... & eating & sleeping too.
2. i hate people/crowd... so, i don't go to cinema anymore (going on for 3 years now)
3. DVD gives me the oportunity to try something new... various genre due to its low price (compare with Laser Disc). used to buy 2 or 3 of LD each month, now for the same price, i could get 10-15 titles of DVD
4. i don't have a life outside the house (except go to work), so i gotta have some hobby....
5. i'm chinese...

I don't really consider myself a "collector", I mean I do collect movies I really like, but I bearly ever blind buy, and I don't buy so many dvds that I have a stack that I haven't seen yet, plus I don't ever think of dvd's in terms or rarity or profitability, I buy dvds not for the cover art, what kind of case it comes in, whether its a criterion, or considered a good movie in general, but because I love it, and want to watch it over and over again
