From www.cartoonresearch.com :

As long as I'm on a rant about POPEYE on DVD, allow me to shamelessly plug a brand new release from the friendly folks at VCI Entertainment. This is the same company that brought you the Fleischer Color Classics collection, Somewhere In Dreamland.

The POPEYE ANNIVERSARY COLLECTORS EDITION dvd VCI is releasing on May 25th contains all 34 public domain Fleischer & Famous Paramount Popeye cartoons, with prints taken from 35mm elements - and re-instated original titles. This is the best Popeye collection on dvd we will see until Warner Bros. releases restored versions some day in the far off future. It's $19.00 retail from VCI or $16.99 from Amazon.com

---------

Basically, they'll be somewhat well done, but...

Warner is restoring the Popeyes from the ORIGINAL NEGATIVES and VCI isn't. Also, most of the public domain Popeye's are the later Famous Studios cartoons, not the Fleischers. So, don't expect Looney Tunes: Gold Collection quality, but at least will have some thought put into the transfers. And the original titles are a plus (although Warner's elements have the original titles built-in since they were never removed from the negatives)

The Somewhere in Dreamland set is OK (Although, a Paramount/Republic DVD from the UCLA restorations made from original negatives and nitrate elements would be much better), so this is probably worth buying.

Just keep in mind that Warner's restorations will blow these out of the water.

I have Popeye's 75th Anniversary(Koch) and have watched one disc and so far the picture quality has been very good except for a few minor problems.

Don't these have "enhanced" sound effects and censorship?
