John Cassavettes Box Set Slated for Fall 2004 from Criterion

Criterion is preparing a boxed set of five films by legendary American independent John Cassavetes. In addition to new high-definition transfers of Shadows, Faces, A Woman Under the Influence, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie and Opening Night, the set will include Charles Kiselyak’s award-winning 200 minute documentary, A Constant Forge, along with exclusive new interviews with Cassavetes collaborators Gena Rowlands, Peter Falk, Ben Gazzara, Seymour Cassel, Lelia Goldoni, and others. The set is slated for fall release. Watch this space for more details.
They will also be releasing Fellini's I Vitelloni in October and Rosi's Hands Over the City sometime around then, but you won't find that on their site.

DVD Talk Gold Edition
on the Cassavetes set. Shadows is my favorite film of his. I wonder how much better the film can look than what's out now. Aren't legal reasons preventing the original version of the film from seeing the light of day?

All these have been previously released. What about "Husbands" and "Love Streams?" I guess at least they'll be better transfers. "A Constant Forge" unfortunately is a real long, cleaned-up, love letter to a man who dedicated his life to showing an honest depiction of life. No mention of his alcoholism and other darksides in this 3 hour + piece of fluff.
Nevertheless, I rejoice the re-release of these great films.

Criterion is certainly the most exciting DVD producer of all time. This fall, we have a re-release of Playtime and M, a three-disc Battle of Algiers, and a Cassavetes collection.
We know this, and the year is not quite half over.

Having said that this is yet another release i'm looking forward to adding to my collection....only ever seen The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie before.
