Yep. Fox got blasted for this in reviews, and they've done a nice job with Seasons 2 and 3.

From: You have moved into a dark place. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
Alias had some confusion, too, since S1 originally aired in 4:3 and not in HD 16:9, but evidently the producers had intended to "protect" the image for 16:9 and after announcing a 4:3 transfer BVHV released it in 16:9, which may or may not be the correct aspect ratio, but it sure does look good.
Then of course there's Kung Fu: Season 1 which was shot and aired in 4:3, then cropped to 16:9 widescreen for the DVD release.

ER has a similar problem as "kung fu" The first 5/6 seasons where filmed (its gets a little fuzzy here) so it can be viewed in either fullscreen or widescreen. But to make the widescreen picture the studio cut off the top and bottom of the screen (sometimes they take teh character's heads with them)!

Typo, there. I meant that they aired in 4:3 ratio on the standard def network feed (as opposed to 24, Stargate, and Enterprise, which air in letterbox 16:9).

24 does not air in letterbox on analog broadcasts. In fact, every once in a while the local stations will forget to "flip the switch" and we'll get the 4:3 version on the digital broadcast too.
