"Widescreen is for intellectuals"
OK, I thought I'd post my first "widescreen" story for anyone interested. I went into a local video store to rent a few DVDs (I hadn't rented there before). The lady at the counter asked if I knew these were widescreen. I said "Of course. I wouldn't rent them if they weren't". She then turned to this middle-aged guy hanging around the counter and said "See, Frank. This guy actually prefers widescreen". Frank replied "I wouldn't watch widescreen if you paid me. Those dumb black bars. It gives me a headache". I then very simply explained to him why widescreen is the only way to go and he replied "That's fine if you're some kind of intellectual, but us regular folks just don't like it and don't care". I thought about trying to explain further, but it was clear he just wasn't interested. Oh, well. What can you do?

You can't really argue with that logic, I must say. 1. I don't consider myself smart. 2. I don't like widescreen. 3. I don't want to think about it any more (fear of another headache?) Kinda puts an end to any further discussion. Oh well, let the guy stick with his new releases at Walmart and VHS tapes. I've long ago stopped trying to 'convert' people... especially those that are willfully ignorant (and apparently proud of it). |

wonder what people do when there is no choice and wide is the only choice?
|
Okay.. why would anybody care what another person's viewing preference is?

people are idiots. i know its harsh but its true. no one complains about the size of an image in a theater, yet make the same image on your television and people start getting mad. i have enough respect for the filmmaker to watch his or her film the way they wanted it.

I have to say. I am a big fan of widescreen, but in my more ignorant days I would think the same about the black bars.
Whatever. I don't blame the guy for his opinion. It doesnt matter to him. he doesnt see the whole movie, but he sees whats important. Honestly I will buy only widescreen, but I really don't fell like I missed something If I got the full screen. The story is still the same. So basically, If a movie I loved was only released in Fullscreen, I would wish it could have been widescreen, but I will still buy it because I love the movie. I don't think Studios will stop making widescreen, even if others don't prefer it. There is a demand for both, and both will continue to be made. People have there opinions and are entitled to it. The guy makes a point. It is for those who think about it. Being a widescreen-movie fan, I am into it. He's not. He's entitled. |
Next time it happens, say one of the following to the person:
"Every time you watch a pan-and-scan DVD, God kills a kitten" or "If we watch fullscreen the terrorists have won." Than just turn and walk away without waiting for a response. |
Originally posted by aam1 Because they would purchase the FS version, which would tell the studios that people like the FS version, so they would continue to release FS versions. Either in addition to WS (Which confuses some people and keeps the price high), or instead of WS (Which annoys people). It's not the 'viewing preference' that bothers me so much as the 'purchasing/renting preference'. I never buy FS, but I've got several DVDs even in my own small collection that have FS versions included in one way or another. It's a waste. |
"dumb black bars"

When you watch full screen you watch with Hitler!

These threads are like a circle jerk.

What does that say about Speilberg, who's company releases FS DVDs? These threads are like a circle jerk. |
Man, I hate those unabridged books. They're for intellectuals. They're just too damn long. I like the Reader's Digest condensed versions.

"A walk through the ocean of some people's minds will barely get your feet wet."
|
Yeah, I guess I'm an idiot cuz I don't like those black bars covering up part of my movie.

I think its funny how everyone wants widescreen because it preserves the aspect ratio that was seen when it was run theatrically yet so many people don't even go to the theatres anymore.

OAR widescreen haters don't like movies very much at all. Period.

No way man... green rules!
(blue gives me a headache) |
Cats are for gays.

I don't like long songs, either, they're for intellectuals--the 30 second samples on Amazon.com are good enough for me.
Personally, I think 'being informed' can make a difference--in many films, the WS and 'FS' versions are vastly different, which you might not be aware of until you check out a comparison. I don't understand 'I don't like black bars', though...that doesn't make any sense to me. |
I have a sister that I was trying to see the light of the benefits of Widescreen.
When watching some film on AMC (that was in Pan and Scan), and there was a scene where two people were talking and it was obvious that in some shots they would only show one person talking to the other, but the other was cut off, so it looked like he was talking to empty space. Pointed it out to her, she didn't get it. Even showed her the Die Hard Special Edition Widescreen/ Pan and Scan Demonstration that's on the DVD, she still didn't get it. Eventually I gave up. It's like it went in one ear, didn't register, and went out the other. Some people just don't get it, or perhaps they don't care. In terms of being "Intellectual" statement. She is the one with the higher education, and she doesn't get the benefits of widescreen. I think it has more to do with the person, than how smart/ educated or "Intellectual" one is. |
I came up with this. Feel free to use it as a signature, but please don't hotlink it.

Originally posted by Peep I still think people who think that personal preference is somehow tied to "being informed" are ridiculous. Maybe that's why people how prefer fullscreen think that widescreen fans are intellectuals - because widescreen fans always try to use intellectual arguments to influence them. I think trying to get somebody to embrace widescreen who doesn't want to is as pointless as trying to convince them, through logical arguments, that blue is the best color or that cats are better than dogs. ... I also think a lot of it has to do with the fact people who don't like widescreen probably have really, really small TVs. |

Originally posted by Rypro 525 wonder what people do when there is no choice and wide is the only choice? I've actually had alot of customers not buy movies when they only come in widescreen, or they act very angry towards me when a fullscreen doesn't exist. They must think I'm hiding the non-existant fullscreen versions in the back or something. |
