OAR widescreen haters don't like movies very much at all. Period.

I still think people who think that personal preference is somehow tied to "being informed" are ridiculous. Maybe that's why people how prefer fullscreen think that widescreen fans are intellectuals - because widescreen fans always try to use intellectual arguments to influence them.

I think trying to get somebody to embrace widescreen who doesn't want to is as pointless as trying to convince them, through logical arguments, that blue is the best color or that cats are better than dogs.

Cats are for gays.

I don't like long songs, either, they're for intellectuals--the 30 second samples on Amazon.com are good enough for me.
Personally, I think 'being informed' can make a difference--in many films, the WS and 'FS' versions are vastly different, which you might not be aware of until you check out a comparison. I don't understand 'I don't like black bars', though...that doesn't make any sense to me.

I have a sister that I was trying to see the light of the benefits of Widescreen.

When watching some film on AMC (that was in Pan and Scan), and there was a scene where two people were talking and it was obvious that in some shots they would only show one person talking to the other, but the other was cut off, so it looked like he was talking to empty space. Pointed it out to her, she didn't get it.

Even showed her the Die Hard Special Edition Widescreen/ Pan and Scan Demonstration that's on the DVD, she still didn't get it.

Eventually I gave up.

It's like it went in one ear, didn't register, and went out the other.
Some people just don't get it, or perhaps they don't care.

In terms of being "Intellectual" statement. She is the one with the higher education, and she doesn't get the benefits of widescreen.

I think it has more to do with the person, than how smart/ educated or "Intellectual" one is.

I came up with this. Feel free to use it as a signature, but please don't hotlink it.

Here's an idea - Maybe someone should come up with a pair of glasses that does to your vision what converting a movie from widescreen to fullscreen does.

... I also think a lot of it has to do with the fact people who don't like widescreen probably have really, really small TVs.

Actually I'm allergic to cats, thanks. And stereotypically it's the lesbians that are into them. Dogs are for gays.

And watch the usage of the word, bub.

Well, just yesterday at my store, I informed a customer that Big Fish only comes in widescreen. His reply, "That sucks!"

I've actually had alot of customers not buy movies when they only come in widescreen, or they act very angry towards me when a fullscreen doesn't exist. They must think I'm hiding the non-existant fullscreen versions in the back or something.

Instead of promoting Widescreen, you should be promoting OAR. Of course, recent threads have revealed that many of so-called "OAR Advocates" on this forum are no better than Joe Six-Pack, as they are now demanding that studios crop 4:3 presentations to fit their widescreen televisions.

illennium 04-28-04 01:27 PM

All widescreen fans are intellectuals? That guy clearly doesn't visit this forum.

I haven't seen ANYONE here or at any other forum advocating cutting the top off of fullscreen programs to make it fit on their widescreen televisions. Just because some broadcasters are doing it does not mean that anyone is demanding it. I find just the opposite actually. There are many people telling the broadcasters to STOP doing it.

asianxcore 04-28-04 01:56 PM

I guess part of it is preference, the other I guess is just misinformation. I hate stuff that isnt in its OAR, but hey if people want their movies cropped, thats ok its their money. My final speech in my speech class this semester is going to be on Widescreen vs. Full Screen. woo.

Why bother trying to explain any further, he just admitted he wasn't an "intellectual" which IMO is the same thing as saying you're stupid.

SideShow 04-28-04 05:07 PM

Hey, I have no problem with being referred to as an intellectual without even trying. Heck, I'm even considering dropping out of college and just watching widescreen movies instead- easier and more fun. I love this thread!

It's amazing how ignorant "black bar" haters really are about this matter.

Abob Teff 04-28-04 05:22 PM

When he stated that he hated the black bars, you should have called him a racist and informed that we're all just people, man.
<P>I know another group of hatemongers that were just following orders and hating widescreen as well! And look how things turned out when Hitler started bossing them around!
