This has been on my wishlist for a while. Should I go for the orginal release or the 10th Anniversary transfer.

Both have their positive and negative aspects, but the original has the better transfer.

Frankly, neither one is great and they really need to triple-dip this one and do it right.

I'd say the out of print Mr. Brown version of Reservoir Dogs has the best transfer of them all.. hehe..

I rented the original awhile before the new version came out, and I didn't see anything that great with it. I bought the "Mr. Pink" version, and I don't have a problem with the transfer. I haven't seen the original in stores for a while, it'd be easier to pick up the SE.

the only "problem" with the new version is that there is less color in the new version. imo there was too much color in the original print. the orignal version is also cropped on all four sides as well. if you watch the trailer again, you can see the top of the wall in teh opening shots when you couldn't see the top in the original version. plus there's too much grain.

and most importantly, pay attention to this link to see the color differences... though the original is a bit cropped, the SE has too many other issues to be the only version that I would own if I could help it.

i know, but i thought there was too much color and there was too much grain in the original version (plus its non anamorphic)

There's nothing wrong with film grain. It's part of what makes film film.

The 10th anniversary edition has horrendously poor black levels --- blacks were actually a washed-out gray --- and there are several missing lines of dialog as well.

The original pressing is much better.

The real answer is to get both if you are a fan... and then get the triple dip fixed version if and when it's ever released...hehe

Thanks for all the help. I managed to find a copy of the original version which will do me for now. It pains me not to get the extras, but it is the film that is most important for me.

As has been mentioned, why not get both? You can get the SE for under $8 shipped from DDD.

The original was over-saturated, resulting in a loss of fine detail. It also was non-anamorphic.

Now the new release is UNDER-saturated, but you can see all of the details.

The original was badly cropped on all four sides. The new release shows the correct image.

The new version has a whole bunch of extras. The original is bare-bones.

There is little to recommend the original unless you prefer the darker, cropped, oversaturated image that was transferred from the VHS telecine.

If you play around with the brightness and contrast on your television the new transfer is actually not that bad. Theres no excuse for having to do that but it makes a significant difference.

Do what I do: don't buy ANY of the releases until they get the transfer right.

Giving Miramax the money for either disc only sends the message that we'll take whatever crap they give us.

While Miramax may have distributed the film theatrically, Artisan is in charge of the video releases. They're the ones giving you crap, not Miramax. Miramax is getting no message from your purchase or non-purchase of the DVD.

I prefer having all of the dialog so there aren't strange silences. And no one who is in a position to give an educated answer has made a comment about which release has the correct framing.

I have both versions and the SE is one of the worst transfers i have ever seen,the color is so washed out that it makes the movie almost unwatchable,the original is by no means a great transfer but it is 20 times better then the se,but the SE has some great extras so if your a big tarintino fan you have to have both of them,if not just get the original one

The original is actually much worse, even if it looks better because the colours are richer.

The original disc has great really black blacks. The problem is that it has black greys, too. Any subtleties in colour shading is lost by the overuse of pumping up the contrast (they do this with lower-res transfers so that you can't see the flaws inherent in the print).

The SE is very much in line with how the film was presented theatrically, and while it's a little undersaturated (the colour timing is a bit off and the brightness is too high) you can actually adjust your display to correct the SE without losing the fine detail.

With the original, the picture information that is GONE is gone - you can never get it back.

They're both flawed, but the SE is less flawed than the original.

It wasn't intentional. From what I can remember there were errors made when they remixed it for 5.1.
