Wild at Heart DVD news.

Lynch says maybe as early as July for a US region 1 release of Wild at Heart.

Info taken from http://www.dugpa.com/

I can't wait for this one.

That would be excellent. If it's true it would have to be announced within the next couple of weeks, though. Most studios are already starting to announced their July releases.

I wasn't sure this was happening for real. At least it appears it's definitely happening in R1 soon

anytime this year would be cool with me!

Thanks for the update.

I'm not banking on it. I remember when the R1 version was supposed to come out last Fall.

Whenever this hits DVD it won't be quick enough.

If you look at the website, Lynch was finishing the color timing of the new transfer at the end of February, and there will be no extras, so I actually have hope for this coming out in July.

Is this DVD going to be a studio release or is it being distributed exclusively through Lynch's website (like Eraserhead)?

I am 99% sure this will be a studio release. Lynch had the domestic rights to Eraserhead and the short films but not to Wild at Heart. From what I understand, he worked on the transfer with the studio...

it is going to be the unrated version, or the optically fogged R-rated theatrical edit of the film?

Great question, Giles. And if it is going to be the opticaly fogged R-rated version, what about the already released R2 version? Did that have the fogging? Anyone know?

word is that the other region editions are the unfogged uncensored print of the film, but I would love to have someone who actually own these versions to reconfirm this...

More importantly: will it have chapter stops?

Having seen both the fogged and unfogged version of the movie, the smoky effect of the fogged version looks aesthetically better and covers up the fakeness of the prosthetic better. IMO.

I have the R2 UK version and it is unfogged.

As far as the effect looking fake without the fog, I only noticed it when I played the scene in slow motion.

What is the "fog" covering up? (It's been a while since I've last watched it.)

The scene where Bobby Peru's head gets blown off was deemed to graphic for an R-rating so some smoke/fog was added in post-production to partially obscure the scene on American release prints.

I would say less importantly: probably not, since Lynch is involved.

Have we confirmed this is extra-less? I don't think Lynch is entirely anti-extras anymore; I know he won't participate in them himself, but the 'Blue Velvet' special edition had stuff, and Lynch himself was trying to get the studio to include cut scenes on 'Fire Walk With Me'. I was under the impression that the studio had hacked almost an hour out of 'Wild At Heart' before it was released, so I really hope that the DVD has something discussing what was cut, even if he chooses not to show it to us. [I wouldn't hold my breath for an extended cut, after he Smitheed 'Dune' and all.]

The studio didn't hack out anything. Lynch overshoots all of his movies because he likes to play around and improvise on set, then in editing he streamlines the picture to the parts that are actually essential to the story. That's just his working method. He's had final cut on all of his movies since Blue Velvet. The theatrical cut of Wild at Heart is his Director's Cut.

From what I understand there was a scene that he cut out after it didn't do well with test audiences. It was the witch doctor death scene. It was apparently much longer and involved originally.

Although, Lynch cut this himself.

This was posted over at the Bits rumor mill on Friday:
Moving on, earlier this week in the daily column, I mentioned that director David Lynch had revealed that his Wild at Heart: Special Edition will be released on DVD later in 2004. We've checked in with our industry sources, and sure enough... MGM is currently planning to debut the title on disc in December, along with a price reduction on Blue Velvet. No word yet on the extras, which are in production as we speak, but you can definitely expect anamorphic widescreen video and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.
Somehow I had a hunch July was wishful thinking.

I hope there's something in the way of extras. I'd sure love to see some of the deleted footage if it still exists, even in rough form.
