new Repo Man release?

Sorry if this topic has been covered, I did a search...

I was browsing at Borders the other day, and i noticed a ton of a new Repo Man release by Universal. I never picked up the Anchor Bay version, and I was wondering what the quality of the new disc is. PQ and sound is more important than extras. I searched for new reviews on it but couldn't find anything but stuff on the old Anchor Bay release. Thanks in advance!

dvdcompare.net is generally a good place to find stuff like that out. But they don't seem to have the new version listed.

It looks as if all the special features were dropped, so I'd say you want to get the Anchor Bay; the tin version comes with (in addition to being in a tin) a CD of the soundtrack and a 48 (?) page booklet, but feature-wise, they're identical.

EDIT: Sorry, I misread your original post, I thought that the second Anchor Bay (the one which was movie, commentary, but no tin or soundtrack) was out-of-print, but it seems like it's readily available.

Which makes me wonder, why did Universal put out a bare bones version but let Anchor Bay leave the special edition on shelves? Seems weird. I guess the Universal is cheaper, but I can't see it selling all that well.

All Anchor Bay editions are "officially" out-of-print. This doesn't mean that copies already sold to vendors are recalled. Since the vendors purchased their copies they should be able to sell them.

Of course there is always the possiblity of a license agreement that would fource a studio to recall all existing copies once their license lapses.

The new Universal version (only one in print now) has a DTS mix, whereas the AB version had THX, no DTS.

Really? I didn't know that. Anyone own both to compare the audio tracks and PQ? I have the tin, but might pick up the Universal for the mix, it's cheap enough...

I wasn't planning on buying this, but I wasn't aware it had a DTS mix either...I'll definitely be getting it now. Thanks for that info!

I don't think it has DTS since it is not listed on any of the sites I checked.

Mono is all I see listed.

But it was originally mono..& sounds excellent that way

The packaging notes DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 & DD 2.0 Mono.

The audio commentary is included.
