Who Iz Diz Ali G?

Folks - I couldn't have been more excited to see on another board that 'Da Ali G' is coming out on DVD.
There weren't any specs. posted, but I'm thrilled nonetheless. One of the funniest shows I've seen since the old days of 'In Living Color'
Respect....

From TVShowsOnDVD.com:
The outrageous comedy/reality series stars British chameleon Sacha Baron Cohen, who travels across America in the guise of one of three totally different characters. Cohen's primary alter-ego is Ali G., who calls himself a "hip-hop journalist", but who's really a white rapper-wannabe. When Cohen isn't putting Ali G and his "guests" in unusual and often delightfully uncomfortable situations, he's shedding his yellow gangsta track suit attire and slipping into two other memorable characters: Borat, an impossibly naive TV reporter from Kazakhstan, and Bruno, a gay, Austrian fashionista. Each of these characters will be traversing America, exploring different aspects of our culture, and interviewing real celebrities and dignitaries.

HBO Home Video will release the complete first season of Da Ali G Show on July 20th. The 2 disc set will contain all 6 episodes (180 mins) as well as bonus features. Presented in full frame (1.33:1), the release will sport an English Dolby Surround Stereo mix, and English, French and Spanish subtitles. Special features include: Unseen clips of Borat, commentary on episodes 1 & 2, Conversation with Ali G, Ali G Glossary, Ali G Spyz Movie featurette and a View-by-Character feature. The suggested retail price will be $29.95.
They also have the cover art at the above link.

Haven't seen his US show, but I have a compilation DVD "Bling Bling" and the Ali G Movie "In Da House" from the UK. Absolute comedic gold! I'll be sure to pick up this latest release.

Ali G was very, very popular here in the UK about 4-5 years ago, but it's one of those characters that only has a relatively short shelf life, like Dennis Pennis and Trigger Happy TV. These guys specialised in taking the mickey out of celebs, politicians and occasionally the public. But once their faces are known, the games up.

I always liked Ali G, especially some of the fake interviews he had with celebrities and politicians.

However, some people complained that the character was racist, but that just goes to show how little they understood the whole point of the character. Sascha Baron Cohen is jewish, and he is playing a white man who is trying to be a black man - and a trendy, bling bling, rap artist style of black man too. And (crucially) failing miserably! THAT was the joke.

Even the talk of his "posse", the Staines Massive was funny to us, because it's a nondescript district of London hardly known for it's gangs or any type of violence whatsoever.

Now, the majority of black people over here got this straight away, and thought it was funny. It's quite funny over here to see these young white kids who desperately want to be black, and this was what Cohen was trying to illustrate.

But some people missed the point completely and thought he was taking the mickey out of black people. I even knew some people that actually thought he WAS black! Yeesh.

Yes, there were some one off specials, and even a movie. The movie came quite a bit after the tv series had ended, and seemed a little superfluous. It's not a bad film, but not as good as the TV series at it's peak.

Some of his other characters, like Borat, can also be quite funny. Clever too. The Borat character was supposed to be kind of Eastern European who could not speak good English. He once attended a hunt (foxes, hounds - that sort of thing). Quite controversial here at the mo, most people want it banned.

He was talking to one of the huntsmen in the character of Borat, and said "In my country too, we like to kill animal, it's nice to kill animal, yes?", and the guy agreed with him, and they continued to have a conversation about how invigotating it was to kill defenseless animals. Now that's clever.

So - if you have not seen him, check him out. E' is like, crucual, innit? Aaaaaaaaaaiiiiiyyyeeeee?

Ali G is pretty hilarious... I really want to see the UK stuff released in region 1 DVD... especially since almost all the new HBO shows are him just re-doing the same gags / jokes here and only sometimes as funny as the original.

I got hold of the first two UK discs - "Innit" & "Aii". I was surprised to find a laugh track present! (Can't remember if its on both discs or not).

Given the nature of his interviews, when he redid certain skits for the US, I found I preferred the US versions, without the distracting laughter.

As regards the aspect ratio, this has been issued in the UK in 4:3 ratio, and the US extras seem similar, but have added two commentaries!

I for one will be picking this one up!

HBO definitely announced it around the time when they said there'd be a second season of 'Carnevale' and no third season of 'Greenlight' (on HBO, that is). (It's coming well before the second season of 'Carnevale', though.)

Summer sounds right, I'll go with whoever said that.
