Stargate SG-1 S5 & S6- Poorly encoded junk
Just picked these two seasons up and I must say I'm very dissapointed.
While the PQ is fairly impressive at times, it just seems to be encoded at a far too low bitrate. It clearly seems as if there are dropped frames, and it will go "slow-mo" way too often.
Yes, we all like extras, but damnit- make the show itself look good first rather than trying to stuff as much as possible into 5 DVDs!
This is pretty much a disgrace. How'd it get by the producers?

Sounds like a problem with your hardware. These look great on my system. Average bitrate for the first disc of season 6 is 5.7mbps. That's better than average.
It's not like these are so packed with extras that there's no room for image data. There's only a ten minute featurette on each disc, no DTS, etc. Plenty of room for a great image.

I never checked the bitrate but I didn't have any problems w/ the playback at all (this was on a PS2, a DVDrom and a Sony 5DVD console).
On a somewhat related note, anyone know anything about season 7 yet? I guess it's still being shown correct? I just finished the last commentary on 6 last night and I don't have Sci-Fi so I'm going to Stargateless for awhile I guess

From what I've heard, Season 7 should be out around the time Season 8 hits the airwaves.

from TVShowsOnDVD's review:
from DVD Angle's Review of Season 6:
MGM is giving consumers a pretty nice anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) transfer for these DVDs. There's still a hint of grain in some shots, especially light grey skies or similar colors. Colors look great, and the widescreen transfer makes use of the frame; I believe season 6 was the first one to air in widescreen after jumping to the Sci-Fi Channel.
Stargate is presented in anamorphic 1.78:1 widescreen, and for the most part, it looks quite nice. Color saturation is excellent, with vibrant hues and natural flesh tones, and the prints are largely free of dirt or debris. Unfortunately, the picture clarity suffers a bit; on close up shots, the transfers spotlight nice levels of detail, but as the camera pulls out, the sharpness degrades accordingly. Consequently, contrasts are a bit spotty, as well. Blacks are deep and rich, but shadow delineation is pretty poor. The visual noise problem that plagued earlier sets has been completely eliminated, and as a whole, this is probably the best looking of all the Stargate sets to date.

From DVD Talk's review:
There's definitely something going on here- I'm not sure what it is, but there's a slowdown at certain points which I don't experience on any other DVD. There are also some other decoding problems. I have no issues with the PQ itself, which is generally VG-Excellent.
I am using a Sony DVP-CX985V changer.
Maybe I'll hook up my Sharp Faraudja based player and see how it look there.
Each disc was crammed full of “stuff”, whether the episodes or extras, the video seemed to be heavily compressed. As a result we didn’t necessarily forfeit in the clarity aspect, but rather there were several occasions in each episode when the picture was “choppy.” In others words there was a highly noticeable drop in frame rate throughout each episode. I found this tiresome on the eyes and highly annoying. Again I was very disappointed with this.

Okay, I put it in the old Apex we have here and did notice some compression artifacts and shimmering - very strange. My Sony 400D doesn't show this AT ALL, nor does my PC (using Power DVD XP).
I found the PQ of the past two seasons to be far superiour to the previous four, which is why I was wondering about this. It seems you're not alone, but it also seems that it IS a hardware-specific problem.
