What DVD Version of "Charade" is Worth Getting?

or

I could get the first one for only $11 (CDN)

The criterion version looks good but it costs $46 (CDN)

is there much of a difference between the two?
is it worth paying 30 dollars more for the criterion version?..can anyone help me out please.

The first is a public domain copy, so you get what you pay for. I haven't seen that particular one, but I've seen a few and they're generally really bad in terms of audio and video. Lots of pixellation, especially every time there's a cut or a scene change, and the picture is very hazy... sort of looks like you're looking at it under dishwater or something. I'd say if you really want to get the film that you should save up and get the Criterion version. If you just want to see it once, I suppose the cheap one will suffice but at least for me those public domain transfers are painful to watch.

"The Truth About Charlie" starring Thandie Newton (Mission Impossible 2) is a remake of Charade, I have no idea if it's any good, but the DVD also includes the original film of Charade as a bonus feature.

Criterion. I have the original - I'm selling that and getting the new anamorphic version.

"The Truth About Charlie" is a good way to get it. It's anamorphic and its only around $9.99. At least that's what Circuit City sells it for.

Yeah, but that's like $200 Canadian.

I grabbed Truth About Charlie fairly cheap at Circuit City, too. It was a really alright film, but having both of the films definitely made up for Charlie's faults. I'm sticking with the cheapo version.

From: You have moved into a dark place. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
FWIW, it looks like the anamorphic version on the Truth About Charlie disc is the exact same transfer that's on the new Criterion disc - it's a little softer than the old non-anamorphic Criterion version, but very very good.

Keep in mind, though, that the bitrate on the Criterion version (new one) is nearly DOUBLE that of the version on the Truth About Charlie.

Keep in mind also that the non-anamorphic original Criterion was OAR, whereas their new 16:9 version is slightly zoomed (the OAR is 1.89:1 and the new version is 1.82:1).

I'm hanging onto my OOP Criterion version. I would've upgraded if they'd improved on the transfer, but alas.

You can never go wrong with a Criterion.. you get what you pay for and when you see the quality and extras in any Criterion, you will be thankful

If you don't already own the OOP non-anamorphic Criterion, then the new Criterion beats the Truth About Charlie version hands-down.

Huh? US $9.99 is most definitely NOT $200 Canadian.

More like $13.15 Canadaian.
