Best DVD of Q1 2004

Continuing from similar polls held throughout both 2002 & 2003, this poll is to help gauge what everyone feels is the best DVD released within the first quarter of 2004.

***REMEMBER - this poll is for the best DVD (i.e. audio quality, video quality, Special Features, etc.), NOT best movie released on DVD... although I guess the film quality does matter to some extent.

If you wish to cast a vote for a title other then one listed in the poll... please select other, and then post your title in this thread. When the total votes are tallied... these "write in" votes will be counted as well.

The Video Dead 04-03-04 02:34 PM

I'd have to say The Chappelle Show First Season DVD followed by Dawn of the Dead. These are the latest dvds i've picked up.

PopcornTreeCt 04-03-04 02:38 PM

The Rules of the Game - Criterion :)

Kinyo 04-03-04 04:01 PM

Schindler's List got my vote.

matome 04-03-04 04:03 PM

Panic Room SE

mdc3000 04-03-04 04:06 PM

It's a tie between Panic Room and Texas Chainsaw... both of those are two of the best SE's I've ever seen.

RobCA 04-03-04 04:26 PM

Ed Wood, but since that wasn't actually released, I went with Futurama.

Rob

REL77 04-03-04 04:27 PM

Definitly Panic Room,

CephalicCarnage 04-03-04 04:41 PM

Futurama!

RyoHazuki 04-03-04 04:53 PM

Panic Room by a mile and a half.

RevKarl 04-03-04 04:55 PM

Another vote for The Rules of the Game: Criterion Edition (and yes, the quality of the film itself does matter!)

Honorable mentions:

The Best of Abbott & Costello, Volume 1 (Universal) "best bargain"
The Chaplin Collection: Volume Two (WB)
The Douglas Fairbanks Collection (Kino)

NaturalMystic79 04-03-04 04:59 PM

Texas Chainsaw Massacre Platinum 2 disc

Simpson Purist 04-03-04 04:59 PM

Futurama Vol. 3

Spiral Staircase 04-03-04 05:15 PM

A third vote for The Rules of the Game: Criterion Collection. It should be included on the poll.

ReduxGuy 04-03-04 05:30 PM

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Matthew Chmiel 04-03-04 05:51 PM

Panic Room. Hands down.

Another fantastic special edition from Fincher and crew. Since Alien 3, Se7en, and Fight Club all have great two-disc special editions and Panic Room has an amazing three-disc special edition it's only time before Fincher's The Game gets an SE. Come on Universal and/or Criterion! :)

jough 04-03-04 05:56 PM

Another vote for La Règle du jeu: Criterion Collection (Rules of the Game). It's a great DVD of one of the greatest films of all time.

My second runner-up would be the Panic Room: SE - it fits the "Film School in a Box" title.

QuiGonJosh 04-03-04 05:59 PM

I voted for Dawn of the Dead: Divimax...although TCM and Panic Room are probably the better sets...and I've watched Futurama Vol. 3 more than the others...the DOTD disc is just awesome! The film looks like it was shot last week and the commentary is great!

cactusoly 04-03-04 06:10 PM

Texas Chainsaw 2 disc. there is so much stuff on it. It sounds Great and all of the documentaries and deleteted scenes are anamophoric.

starseed 04-03-04 06:52 PM

Um... Freaks and Geeks...? Anyone?

MovieMaster11 04-03-04 06:56 PM

Texas Chainsaw Massacre Platinum 2 disc without a doubt follwed by:
MWC 2nd season and Chappelle show 1st season

With its April 6th release date, it just missed the first quarter.

But I imagine it'll have a strong showing in next quarter's poll.

I voted for Dawn of the Dead

LBCrazyFool 04-03-04 07:34 PM

I just finished with the new Panic Room SE and gotta say that gets my vote. Great extras!

antennaball 04-03-04 09:00 PM

Another vote for Chappelle.

LasVegasMichael 04-03-04 09:39 PM

Panic Room is comperable to the stunning Alien Quad as far as film DVD treatment.

Definately # 1 in my book, and I wasn't even a big fan of the film. This is one of the few titles that I purchased SOLELY because of the extras. Prior to this SE, I had no plans on owning this film.

onebyone 04-03-04 11:32 PM

Lost in Translation is my favorite movie of the bunch, but that dvd is not the greatest. I voted for Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Platinum) because I always have to support horror movies getting the deluxe treatment.

B.A. 04-03-04 11:36 PM

Chappelle - Season 1

 Same here. I thought the movie was alright the first time I saw it, never thought I would own it. Glad I bought the Special Edition.:D Well worth the money...

Re: Panic Room: SE

I've come to appreciate the film more on a second and third viewing. It's one I wouldn't have bought if not for the extras.

But while I thought the film was interesting and good but not great, the DVD extras are FABULOUS and really show how the film was put together. Knowing how much work and care went into it helped me to appreciate the film more.

I'm impressed with not only how comprehensive the extras are, but also how well-done. For instance, in the pre-vis intro Fincher mentions that he want to change something - cue a window on the bottom right that shows you the revisions (and nicely lables it as such). Classy.

My only beef with the extras is that there's no English subtitle for the extras - only Spanish. I haven't checked to see if they're close-captioned yet (I tend to use the DVD remote only, and it doesn't have a button for CC).

My vote went to the Dawn of the Dead Divimax...i appreciate making a 20 yr old horror movie look like it was made yesterday....great picture and sound quality is more important to me than a bunch of extras.

TBFL 04-04-04 08:12 AM

It was a toss up between Curb Your Enthusiasm and my choice of The Commitments as Ive been dying for a decent release of that film.

jfrost 04-04-04 11:44 AM

BTW... I chose Panic Room SE. Easily the best DVD release of the year so far.

OldBoy 04-04-04 11:50 AM

"Dawn.." just cause it's only one I've seen so far this Q. http://www.therewindforums.co.uk/for...kodomagnam.gif

jfrost 04-04-04 01:55 PM

Here are the write in votes so far (after of 100 votes casted)...

The Rules of the Game (Criterion) - 4
Chappelle Show: Complete First Season - 3

MrN 04-04-04 02:12 PM

Another vote for Rules of the Game.

Though the result of this poll is starting to look clear.

bdots48 04-04-04 02:39 PM

Another 'other' vote for Rules of the Game (if forced from the above list it would be Panic Room,a movie I thought was a little better than so-so,but it's a great dvd set).

Actually, according to the thread topic is does not. It's the best "DVD", not the best film, TV show etc etc.
