Best Stand Up Comedy DVD out there?

?

Eddie Griffin in DysFunKtional Family had me rolling.

Eddie Izzard: Dress to Kill is great.

Cake or Death!

Doughboy 03-30-04 09:52 PM

If you're region-free, Ricky Gervais Live!(aka Animals) is a great standup DVD. It includes a behind-the-scenes documentary and commentary track.

Dane Cook: Harmful If Swallowed

Contains a CD of his comedy act and a DVD which includes both the edited and uncut versions of his Comedy Central Presents special and other various segments.

Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie

1.Eddie Izzard - Dress to Kill
2.Dave Chappelle - Killin' Them Softly
3.Robert Schimmel - Unprotected
4.The Original Kings of Comedy
5.Robin Williams - Live on Broadway

Kaffe_02 03-31-04 12:11 AM

Kevin James - Sweat the Small Stuff

Pariah 03-31-04 01:03 AM

Robin Williams "Live on Broadway"
Dane Cook "Harful if Swallowed" (find it in the audio section)
Lewis Black "Lewis Black Unleashed" (if you are a fan of comedy with a political slant)
I haven't seen the dvd yet, but I've seen him enough to recomend Mitch Hedberg "Mitch All Together" (also in the audio section)

Here's one for you, Henry Rollins "Up for It" it's called spoken word, but it's really a stand up with some stuff that isn't a joke. If you know who Henry is and like him I reccomend this, if you don't know they guy I say rent it first, he's not the kinda guy everyone would be into. He's the former lead singer for Black Flag. He has two other dvds I haven't picked up yet, "Live from Luna Park" and "Talking from the Box/ Henry Goes to London" which is a two disc set.

deluis 03-31-04 02:51 AM

The Original Latin Kings Of Comedy.

Mike 03-31-04 04:24 AM

The Comedy Central website has a Mitch Hedberg CD that also has a full length show on a separate DVD disc.

Mitch is my favorite comedian out there today.

Shannon Nutt 03-31-04 04:40 AM

I'm Telling You For The Last Time - Jerry Seinfeld.

"Comedian" - while a documentary, is also a great DVD about stand-up comedy.

PinwiZ 03-31-04 06:42 AM

Mitch Hedberg's latest CD (Mitch All Together) has a DVD of his comedy central specials. It's quite great.

I'd also vote for Dane Cook's Harmful If Swallowed.

And Chris Rock's stuff is obviously good.

RevKarl 03-31-04 07:08 AM

George Carlin: On Location (1st HBO show)
Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip
Chris Rock: Bring the Pain
Robin Williams: Live on Broadway

I'd add Robert Schimmel: Unprotected, but I've never found it on DVD (Quake, you've got a rarity there.)

Also, I'm a big fan of the late Sam Kinison, but his DVDs simply don't do him justice (no match for his first and last albums.)

Al Padrino 03-31-04 07:54 AM

Kevin James: Sweat the Small Stuff
Jerry Seinfeld: I'm Telling You For the Last Time
Lewis Black: Unleashed
Comedian
Dave Chappelle: Killin' Them Softly
Bruce Bruce (Platinum Comedy Series)

Out of those, I think James is the best one, as it's one of the least expensive stand-up DVDs out there and one of the few specials that doesn't have any spots that aren't at least a bit funny.

While I'm on the subject of stand-up, wouldn't it be great if Comedy Central went full out and started releasing their Presents series on DVD? I know a few are out (i.e. Cook and Hedburg), but those are only with their CDs. I'd definitely buy the series were it ever to be released onto DVD, since there's few that I've actually disliked and many of them are just classic (Gaffigan, Ramey, Alexandro, etc).

This thread only serves as a painful reminder that Eddie Murphy's Delirious and RAW are still MIA. :(

Dennis Miller: Raw Feed
Dennis Miller: Live from DC
Jerry Seinfeld: I'm Telling you for the Last Time

Seinfeld is now a bargain DVD, and can be found fairly cheaply. It is all his best material from his early and more recent days.

The two DM's are really catered to those that like his esoteric style. Personally, I love it, but that is just me.

Of course, this is just my opinion, and I could be wrong....

Nicey Nice!

You can also get these 2 Dice DVD's. One Night with Dice, and No Apolpgies.

Also, Best Buy's carries a DVD Box Set called Laughing Out Loud, a 5 Disc Set that has highlights of over 50 stand up's I believe, also the Best of the Improv is a good box set as well.

Phuzbox 03-31-04 10:27 AM

Another vote for Eddie Izzard - Dress To Kill. I also recommend Joe Rogan - From The Belly Of The Beast.

It's only available on his website for $24.95. Expensive, but worth it if you are a fan.

WTF?! no love for David Cross - Let America Laugh? Damn
'Let America Laugh' is a documentary about David Cross doing a stand-up tour; why would anybody reccommend it as a stand-up DVD? It *specifically* has a sticker on it that says (paraphrased) "This is not a stand-up comedy show, this is a documentary".

I'd like to chime in Mitch Hedberg's "Mitch All Together" as well; the DVD has an uncensored, unedited version of his Comedy Central show; it's almost twice as long, and it's really cool to watch the way they cut it way down. (Also, I think it's funny that three different people explained it in exactly the same way, as if it hadn't been said by the other two.)

And, of course, anything by Eddie Izzard is guaranteed to be amazing.

It is still mostly filled with standup footage, it just isn't a straight stand-up show.

Is this the same as the VHS that was out awhile ago? (The cover was yellow with other colors going on around I believe and it had a picture of him in the middle of it). Actually, the VHS is the same as his "Off White" album with the exception of like two missing parts (limbo and his sing-along at the end).

The Exister 03-31-04 01:25 PM

If there were a Bill Hicks DVD out there (is there?), I'd be all over that.

Otherwise, I dig the Kevin James special and the Richard Pryor stuff.

I second The Blue Collar Comedy tour

Regurgitator 03-31-04 04:47 PM

I would have to say SEINFELD that's coming out!.. hehe..

I know it's NOT completely a Stand Up Comedy but he does do it at the beginning and at the end of the show now and then.

mrlumpy 03-31-04 05:12 PM

Chris Rock: Bigger and Blacker was one of my prize finds at a Wal-Mart $5.88 bin. I have not been able to find Seinfeld: I'm Telling You For the Last Time in there, but there have been reports.

I'll add my voice to the folks that like the Mitch Hedberg and Louis Black DVD's. Louis is my hero.

Concorde 03-31-04 05:28 PM

Chris Rock: Bring The Pain
Chris Rock: Bigger, Blacker

I have watched these two over and over...

Ouch! I guess that new, young wife of his is more expensive than he thought.

While I'm a fan, I don't think I can justify paying a "Criterion-like" price for a stand-up DVD... I'll just live with my off-HBO VHS copy until the price drops (hopefully the DVD will get a major-label release if his sitcom gets picked up by Fox.)

Dammit 03-31-04 11:36 PM

That Eddie Izzard one must be good. It's constantly on "long wait" at netflix.

Edit: I just realized I don't think Eddie Murphy Raw or Delerious has ever been released on DVD. Wtf?
