I used 2 printers, one is the Epson R300 (use the DVD print part when I do my own videos from my camcorder), and the old stand by, my HP1315. I find it is a good workhorse, and easier on ink than my Epson.

I use Epson Stylus CX5400 printer ($149 at BB before $20 rebate and $15 gc rebate) along with HP brochure and flyer paper ($10 for 50 sheets). It is 8.5 x 11 and has a slight gloss to it. It works great!
Also, use dvd cover print program to print and you will not have to use legal paper or adjust the margins. Mine prints on one 8.5 x 11. The only thing that I had to change in my printer settings was high quality photo printing.

Im considering printing some covers myself...does or has anyone used the HP 5550? I just want to know how it works...its not one of the high-dollar printers or made mostly for photos, but it does print pretty good...just not sure how good covers will look.

Haven't used the HP, but I've found that my Canon i850 does a fantastic job, without legal paper, or taping on extra bits.
I load normal letter paper, but set the page size in Photoshop to Legal Landscape. In the Print with Preview, there's an option to set the Position. Turn off the "Centre Image" checkbox, then set the "Left" box to 0. In the Canon setup, just choose the Paper type and the print quality, don't specify any sort of options like Borderless or Fit to Page or anything.
Because of the way it handles the paper, when you print it, you get a perfectly centred cover, and can trim it on all four edges.
