Another place says it's 3 discs.
More extended fun comes by way of Das Boot: The Original Uncut Version (which must be a record - how many versions of one film can there be!?). Originally produced as a German miniseries, Wolfgang Petersen's epic will get the two-disc DVD treatment at last, presented in anamorphic widescreen and a newly created Dolby 5.1 surround track from the original restored stereo stems, plus the option to watch the original Director's Cut version, a making-of featurette and theatrical trailers. Retail for this three-disc puppy will run you $39.95.

Comparison from The Bits on the old flipper and the Superbit > http://www.thedigitalbits.com/review...tsuperbit.html < for those still on the fence re: DTS/PQ vs commentary track.
Think I'll join the crowd here and say that I'll just hang on to the Superbit and check this one out of curiosity... (there is clearly a difference between the DD track and the stunning DTS track on the Superbit - if you say otherwise, you might want to check your gear)
BTW... Has anyone seen this longer cut? DVD Josh? You say that most of what was cut was extended scenes and character development?

I reckon that one hour and a half are still a good deal of time to contain only extended scenes and character development.
Has anybody seen the series before?

Five hours? Fuggedaboudit! LOL Chinese take-out, cold beer, and the sound turned up so we can hear every single one of those hideous creaks and moans coming from the U Boat's shell. Yeah baby!

I guess I would want to know a bit about what was cut from the series for the DC......
I have been holding out for a long time on this one. If the added material really doesn't add too much, then I will probably just get the Superbit. But if the material really helps out the story a lot (a la the EEs for the LOTR trilogy, IMHO) then I will get the Series.
But since I have been waiting for so long, at this point, I'll just wait until summer time and see what everyone else has to say.......
Until then, I'll go pop in U571 for my sub fix.

I will probably not upgrade, especially not without DTS, which this movie greatly benefits from. If the question is going from SB to FULL, I'd say no, but for someone who doesn't own it, the miniseries is just as good of a choice.

Hmm, I was just about to order the Superbit. Hopefully the new version has the DC included because I want that as well. If it's not included I'll just buy the SB, even though I don't care about DTS too much.
mmmm, cold beer. mmmm.

Depends on what's more important to ya... A commentary or improved PQ and sound.

THis is tempting. I already own the previous 2 DVDs out. I'm considering selling off the first DVD because I rarely listen to commentaries.
In any event I'd like to see the whole 5-hour movie. A rental at the very least.
