Is this dvd rot?
Hi, Not sure if this is the right part of the forum for this but i couldnt find anywhere else, I bought the first season box set of malcolm in the middle the other day at suncoast and i just noticed today after watching one of them that the bottom of the dvds are like a diffrent shade in some spots almost like something was spilled on it but i know something wasnt cause there brand new, Im just wondering if this is anything to worry about or should i take it back and get a diffrent one? Thanks

I had a similar problem with "The Nightmare Before Christmas". The data side appeared to have a swirl of color in it. After a half dozen playings, it started to freeze. It got worse with each playing. I contacted the manufacturer (Disney) and a very nice tech support engineer listened to my problem. He sent me a new disk (no swirl) and I returned the old one so they could analyze it. I didn't hear back from them. My guess is that "laser rot" is actually a de-lamination of the two layers.

Yeah, this "look" can be seen on any digital disc media: CDs, DVDs, etc. It usually doesn't effect playback or access, but I had an old PC game that had that and my CD-ROM drive had trouble reading it.

I have had dvds rot, the layer between the 2 layers has just gone bad on a few dvds, one pretty much came apart from the other layer! and I keep mine at normal conditions, its only 1 in 1000 it happens to me, but still the few like it have all not just stopped workin, but dont even register as media on any dvd or pc.

From DVD Demystified:
There are also occasional reports of "cloudiness" or "milkiness" in DVDs, which can be caused by improper replication. An example is when the molten plastic cools off too fast or isn't under enough pressure to completely fill all the bumps in the mold (see this archived article from TapeDisc Business for more). Minimal clouding doesn't hurt playback and doesn't seem to deteriorate. If you can see something with your naked eye it is probably not oxidation or other deterioration.

I think it has to do with more the glue used to seal the layers than the colors on the DVD itself. Artisan used bad glue in a huge batch of DVDs (such as Kentucky Fried Movie and Heathers) and thousands of copies were ruined within months.
