Whatever Happened To Millennium Editions?

Elite Entertainment put out three great releases in their Millennium Edition series in 2002, Night Of The living Dead, Re-Animator, and I Spit On Your Grave. Each of these is now considered the definitive release on DVD. But, what has happened to this great series? The last release was on 17 December 2002. That is over 15 months ago. Has anyone heard or read anything about the future of this series?

I think we are now too far past the turn of the millenium for any kind of any item using that title to really be meaningful from a marketing standpoint. Actually, at this point anything called Millenium Edition would sound a bit out of date. So I'm sure Elite decided just to drop the whole concept, although they may still release deluxe editions in the future under some other sort of banner.

Millenium Editions are so September 10th. -ohbfrank-

jough 03-21-04 04:24 PM

What about the "Divimax" banner? Isn't that the same company?

No, Divimax is used by Anchor Bay.

jough 03-21-04 06:09 PM

Ah, my bad.

So is Elite still releasing SEs, just under a different title?

TomOpus 03-21-04 06:22 PM

Maybe there aren't any movies (that they have the rights to) that have the right to be called "Millennium Edition".

No. Right now Elite is releasing the Joe Bob Briggs Presents series and the Drive-In Discs series. That is it.

This actually may be the real answer. I just miss this series because the editions were all definitive.

I guess Image doesn't own the rights to any other movies that are deserving of the banner. Let's face it, I Spit on Your Grave might have killed the line.

I don't think so. I Spit On Your Grave is on a par with the other Millennium releases. The Joe Bob Briggs commentary alone made this a gem.

Maybe I said that wrong...

What I meant was that maybe people were turned off by I Spit on Your Grave. I own it and like it, but I'm not sure it fits most peoples' tastes.

The sales might not have been what Image was looking for, so they might have dropped the line because of it.

Given that it was the success of the Joe Bob Briggs commentary on I Spit On Your Grave which spawned the Joe Bob Briggs Presents series, I really doubt that.

Well holy crap, aren't you Mister Fancy Pants who just knows everything.

I'm guessing your everyday shopper didn't pick up this movie. In fact, I'll bet that the sales for Re-Animator and NotLD were at least double what they were for I Spit on Your Grave.

The everyday shopper did not buy Night Of The Living Dead and Re-Animator either. These are genre titles in special editions targeted at collectors.

NotLD is a movie than many people know and have heard of.

mikerodot78 03-23-04 04:09 PM

Re-Animator Millenium is OOP according to someone I talked to at DDD after they sent me the wrong edition.

Night Of The Living Dead is a cult film which most people have never seen. Most people have never heard of George Romero. The people who post on this board are not representative of average moviegoers. We are mostly collectors, so while most of us may know about Night Of The Living Dead, that is the exception and not the rule.

That is not true according to Elite's website. Here is the relevant URL:

Ask anyone on the street if they've heard of Night of the Living Dead. They may not know who George Romero is, but they'll sure as hell know of the movie.

My mom and dad know about it, and that's saying a lot. It's not a cult classic, it's a plain classic. It's popularity ranks right up there with Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Trust me, people know about it.

I didn't realize Elite had anything to do with Image.

And I think the Millennium Editions went the way of the Vista Series.

Right. Live in your fantasy world in which average folks are aware of cult films. Reality still wins out.

Wow, what a strange isolated world you must live in!

I think most people would at least be aware that there's a film titled "Night of the Living Dead" or "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" even if they haven't seen either.

They are so pervasive in our culture that there are pop-references to both of them in hundreds of sources.

Heck, even Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video (which was HUGELY popular back in the mid-80s) was a video remake of NotLD.
