Ever second guess your collection?
 

Good Morning DVDtalk,
I was just viewing the thread about "Post your pictures of your dvds" and WOW. Some of you got thousands of movies. I think i won about 10 or so. Do you ever look at your collection and think "man thats allot of money?" Do you own the dvds just in case you have company over and they like a certain film or do you watch every movie more than 3 times to justify a purchase rather then rent? Or do you just buy the movie to buy it. (addicted)? Habbit or what not? Just curious. Thanks.

I admit, I'm at the point of 4th and 5th guessing. However, I believe that there are worse addictions to be had.

Looking back, I went from collecting bottle caps, to stamps, to coins, and now to dvds. I guess it's in the blood....

I second guess mine all the time. I'm leaning towards only keeping my box sets, due to the fact those are really the only things I watch anyway. There may be 10 or so I am considering keeping.

Not nearly as much as I do the 13k+ (or whatever it is) collection of Magic cards ;)

Anyways I own almost 400. Most were purchased back in 2000/2001, I went on a crazy buying spree. Though I've cut back on my purchases to mainly must have new releases and TV on DVD. Anyways, yes I look at my collection and think, crap. Way too much, while not as much as some, I've wasted quite a bit. I tend to not rewatch any of the titles I own, except when I get a new season of a TV show... I tend to watch all the seaons in order.

Anyways, since I started using Netflix, there hasn't been a huge need to purchase titles, as it's just a lot cheaper to rent. Yar.

Nope, never. I love my dvd collection. And anyway it's just something to spend my disposable income on.

Although I do buy considerably less now than I used to but thats just because with over 700 titles I already have MOST of my must haves.

I try not to think about the whole financial aspect of how much i've spent or am likely to...i only really ever view my collection with thoughts along the lines of......'Damn!...i'm going to need more space' :)

I calculated how much I musta spent, and DAMN, that's a lot of money... BUT... the only things I'd really wanna get rid of, are those scooby doo tv series dvd's i bought, since ill soon be buying the 'seasons 1 and 2' collection, that is giong to make those other dvd's useless.

I don't worry about it. I've got a touch over 1000 discs. About once every six months I go on a purge, and sell off the stuff I'm no longer interested in. I'd guess I've sold off about 250 discs over the last couple of years.

Nah, I try not to think about it especially when I look at my 600 laserdiscs of which the majority have already been replaced with it's DVD counterpart. :(

Nope, I mean it isn't like I was drunk when I bought the stuff , bought the dvds over the course of a few years and perfectly happy with my collection right now. If I don't like something to ebay it goes, so what I have now is stuff I will rewatch sooner or later. Which I why I still own them, as for the question about keeping them around for company, not really no, but my tasted are varied enough that I can usually find something someone else will like in my collection.

Yes, in moments of weakness I think of how much money I could have saved if I hadn't gone so hog wild with my DVD collecting. Still, there are very few of my DVDs that I'm sorry I bought. When I do come upon that occassional dud it gets sold off and I use the money to get a DVD I really want.

The difference between DVD collections and other collections is you can easily sell DVDs.

I go through my collection every once in a while and put a few up on Amazon to sell (less frustration than Ebay). I've sold some within minutes of listing and sold all that I ever listed.

So, if you need money, you can get it quickly from getting rid of them. A very liquid investment.

I own under 200, although I've seen many, many more than that. I don't rent, but I'm constantly buying and selling DVDs that I think are only worth a couple of views. I couldn't imagine ever holding onto the huge collections that some people have here, but that's just me.

One day my wife second guessed it. I'm just now approaching 400 and I've had a player since 1999, so I'm not TOO bad into it. But when I calculated what she spent on cigarettes in a year, neither one of us second guessed it again.

Unlike other "habits" where you destroy the evidence (throw away the cigarette box, beer bottles, money in clubs, etc) having a rack of movies is just a constant reminder of the money you've spent. And like many have said, they can be sold easily.

And as to why, I like having a good selection when folks come over, or when they want to borrow. (Yes, I loan DVDs) As my children get older, they hear about classic films and such in school or from friends. Its nice when they find that film in daddy's collection.

Second guess then entire collection? Never

Second guess specific titles? Every day.

I have about 310 right now, and a few on order. I am always looking at my collection (as it is right next to my home office desk), and figuring which, if any, I should list on Half.com or trade away.

More often then not, I don't get rid of any, but I am always stuck on certain titles, thinking whether or not I should upgrade to a better edition (try to avoud double dipping, and would rather just dump inferior versions).

I have always enjoyed movies, and used to have a comperably large VHS collection that has since, obviously, faded away, so no regreats here.

I do second guess my purchases some time, escepically when see they go on sale later or have a quick price drop (ala Wrong Turn), but then I think of the joys they have braught me over the years and the joys they have brung to other people I let watch them. If I am ever strapped for cash, yeah I wouldnt buy near as many, but I am not right now. If I didnt spend the money on DVDs, I would have gotten something else (like wasteful video games {which you really dont play twice} or something else stupid). DVD collecting is kinda an investment

Back when I collected comic books I thought it was a lot to spend $500 in a year. Now I do $2000 in a year with DVDs. I could have had a nice vacation in 'anywhere' with that money. I'm always cleaning up my collection. At one time I didn't think I would make it to 500 but I think 1000 is my benchmark. I tend to get rid of the same as I buy these days.

second guessing? no...I prevented myself from wasting that kind of time and $ by buying what I love or have interest in. I never blind-buy...which cuts down on the crap by 100%. I dont buy what I really dont want...I just cant understand why someone would make such poor judgement calls.

close to 1,500 titles now and they are all there for a reason. I'm still at the stage where my library is way in-complete...by about 600 titles. I'm slowing down on weekly purchases...but only because I'm working 60 hour weeks and have little time to enjoy shopping, regardless if it's by store or on-line. on the average, I feed my library around 10 titles per week...of late though...around 6. this week...I have 7 domestic releases and 5 imports arriving.

the only thing I second guess is....I bought 3 today, but WHY did I pass up the other 3 I saw!!!! why...why...WHY!!!:p

oh yeah...for those unfamiliar with my collecting style:

I dont rent.
I dont re-sell
I dont trade
I NEVER loan out.

...but I may give something away to a buddy or someone less fortunate. I have also donated a few to the local library...when I've upgraded a few titles. usually...I keep my extras.

I don't second-guess my collection anymore - I used to just buy DVD's and games simply because they were cheap or "limited edition". The majority of them I watched once then shelved them to collect dust. I was short on money last summer, so I sold off a huge chunk of my movies and games, and I haven't regretted it. Now I only buy absolute must-have titles, which are few and far between. Freddy vs Jason was my most-anticipated DVD since way before the movie was even in theaters, but I didn't even buy it until Thursday night, very very cheap from BBV. Being a college student is extremely limiting on finances, so I have to ensure that any purchases I make are well worth it.

nope, have never second guessed my collection. I buy movies that I really like, or enjoy, so having a whole lot of my favorite movies around for me to watch is always nice.

Sometimes I second guess, especially on those crappy free DVDs I got (the "get a DVD player, get 5 free DVDs" offer).
