Starship Troopers 2 in April?

I just noticed this http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000171RAY/

from IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367093/ it seems it was a direct to video (or maybe a TV movie first). Anyone heard of this, or seen it? I can only assume an R1 release is on the way, anyone seen anything about it?

If I'm not mistaken, Phil Tippet is directing. He's an sfx guy whose credits include the original Starship Troopers, Robocop (ED-209 stuff), and the original Star Wars Trilogy (stop motion, creature effects).

Can it possibly be anywhere near as good as the first?

I'll definitely check this one out. I know it will probably pale in comparison, but it may have some redeeming qualities.

The user comments are generally in favour of the film, so there is hope.

It will be on Sci Fi channel first in the US and then on DVD in June for R1. At least that is what I read last week, on the official site I believe...?

*** Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation to premiere on Cable on the Encore Action Channel in April *** -- According to the latest update at www.starshiptroopers2.net, Starship Troopers 2 will premiere on the Encore Action Channel as part of the channel's Saturday Action Zone lineup. Look for ST2 to air on Saturday, April 24th at 10:00pm ET with an encore on Wednesday, April 28th at 10:00pm ET.
Encore Action is a part of the Starz Encore Group, and can be found on many Cable systems as part of the premium channel package. For additional information, visit the Starz! website at: http://www.starz.com/se/action/index.html

*** Starship Troopers 2 DVD release dates announced for various regions *** -- With the film set to premiere on the Encore Action Channel in late April, Columbia/Tristar has announced DVD release dates for Region 1, 2, and 4.
Region 1 (USA & Canada) -- June 1st
Region 2 (Europe, Middle East & Japan) -- April 19th
* Poland (R2) -- June 29th
Region 4 (Australia) -- May 19th

Sony Pictures has decided to push the release date of the Starship Troopers 2 DVD back into the summer, with June 1st as the official "street date" for the DVD release in the USA. The film has been given an R rating by the MPAA. While the reason for the push-back has not been announced, it certainly allows more time for a proper promotional effort. As mentioned above, the film is slated for an initial release on television, initially on the Encore Action Channel. A theatrical release in foreign markets is still under consideration.

I have Encore, but I won't watch it if the DVD is going to be anamorphic. Anyone know?

That's a pretty vague statement.

What's "online"? The DVD is up for pre-order? Or are you trying to say people are downloading the whole movie? (Not something we care about here).

I think meant that the dvd is up on pre-order (R2 that is)
and yes that is 1:1.85anamorphic, so my guess would be the upcoming R1 would be as well. Did not find it for preorder for R1 though

Has it got boobs? Bugs? Soldiers with boobs blasting the bugs? While I do think the original is a very sharp satire on war propaganda, it's also fun to watch for the above. There was apparently a lot of unused material from the original book, so they might have something to go off of.

Cool according to the schedule it's coming out in Japan in April. Before it's aired on TV? May be worth a check. Enjoyed the first.
Do they show boobs and gratuitous violance on the Encore Action Channel?

What 89981 means is that it is available to download at your own discretion on the internet. A German dubbed version was released over a month ago. The American version was released at the beginning of the month.

From dvdfile.com

Up next is the direct-to-DVD sequel Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (and no, Paul Verhoeven is not back on board). Presented in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1, extras include an audio commentary with the filmmaking team, the "From Green Screen to Silver Screen" and "Inside the Federation" featurettes, a still gallery and bonus trailers. Retail will list for $24.95. Columbia will also release Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles - Trackers on the 1st, which includes four episodes ( "Pluto and Beyond," "Propaganda Machine," "Marooned" and "Court-Martial of Lt. Razak") presented in 4:3 full screen and Dolby 5.1 but no extras. Expect to ante up $14.95 for this one.
The date given is 1 June.

I assume the Roughnecks one are all the clip eps... a shame they didn't add any features

I thought that the first one WAS a popcorn flick?! Granted, a very intelligent popcorn flick, but nonetheless . . . (Before you even begin, let me say that I do own BOTH versions AND the entire Roughnecks series!)

AFAIK it's the 4 clip shows and the missing show... a shame everything is out of order but atleast everything will be out now.
