What are some good non-mainstream animation dvds?

What are some good non-mainstream animation dvds? Stuff like Fantastic Planet, Watership Down, Plymptoons, or those Canadian cartoon dvds.

I assume by your name you're not talking about anime. I'm not sure what you consider "mainstream"?

Well, as far as western stuff, Allegro Non Tropo, Waking Life, Fritz the Cat, Heavy Traffic, Heavy Metal, Titan AE, The Hobbit, so many.

Still waiting for The Flight of Dragons...

Maybe Spike & Mike's Twisted Film Festival would interest you.

Tough call for me. Last time I saw it was when it first came out on TV. I remember it had some nice Harry Nilsson songs and was an amusing movie. I'd like to see it again to see how well it had held up.

But I don't know if I'd label it as "non-mainstream".

Here's a few "non-mainstream" titles:

The Cartoons of Halas & Batchelor
Creature Features (by the Wallace & Gromet crew)
The Cameraman's Revenge
The Puppet Films of Jiri Trnka
The Brothers Quay Collection
Jan Svankmajer's Alice

However, excepting the Halas & Batchelor title, they are great examples of puppet or stop-motion animation. But, IMHO, that in itself pretty much defines "non-mainstream" animation.

A recent puppet animation release is Hamilton Mattress. I haven't seen it yet, but have heard good things, although I believe it is aimed at young ones. Unlike most of the above mentioned titles, which are definitely not for children.

I'd also second the Spike & Mike animation collections. Again, animation definitely not for children.
