I'll still get it. I was planning on buying the movie, not the extras.

I heard that they had to cut out the extras to keep the dvd under 21 grams, for marketing reasons. Those extra bits add up.

Originally posted by Neeb That's a good possibility. Criterion and Universal are friendly enough and Criterion has been making considerable effort to license more titles. |
The ad for "21 Grams" in the Video Business trade journal lists "Numerous featurettes" and "Theatrical Trailer" as extra features.
Just because Amazon.com doesn't list the features doesn't mean a disc doesn't have any. |
It wasn't just amazon, DVDAnswers also wrote:
Universal appear to have scrapped all extra material from the release of 21 Grams which stars Sean Penn and Naomi Watts. The disc was originally set to include a 21 Grams: In Fragments featurette as well as a Making of 21 Grams featurette. This will no longer be the case. Our suspicions were raised initially, when Universal sent over a menu shot that didn't feature an extras menu. Since then, Universal have sent out reviewcopies - which again feature no extra material to speak of. Perhaps a two disc special edition is on the cards? This featureless disc will be available to own in two weeks time, and should retail at around $26.98. |

21 Grams Extras Removed Just a bare bones DVD now. March 04, 2004 - We're not sure why, unless a special edition is coming, but Universal Pictures has removed the extras for the film 21 Grams, starring Sean Penn, Oscar nominee Naomi Watts and Benicio Del Toro. The film ison March 16 for $26.98. Imagine Quentin Tarantino trying to be serious, and you have 21 Grams. It's about three people: a dying mathematician (Penn) in a loveless marriage, a happily-married suburban housewife (Watts) and an ex-convict who has found God (Del Toro). All three lead their separate lives until a terrible accident brings all three of them together. The film will be available in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS audio. There were two two featurettes: 21 Grams: In Fragments and The Making of 21 Grams. But now, Universal has removed all references to the featurettes on their media site. If we find out why, we'll let you know. |
I'll definately be picking this up when its released. Hopefully it wont be too pricey.

Okay, I knew I wasn't seeing things.
So they announced extras, and then... what? Decided to remove them later? What the hell is Universal thinking? How many releases have they screwed up now? Is it 73 or 74? |
No doubt there'll be a re-release in the future with the omitted extras (and maybe even more).
I wouldn't be surprised if Criterion paid for the license of this title. |
If you told me this 6 months ago, I might have cared, but I hardly watch any extras anymore unless it's something I really wanna see. Now when I buy a DVD, I care about the movie first.

This title is PERFECT for audio commentary and making-of featurettes. The director is obviously a fan of DVDs, since he supplied several extras for the DVD of his first movie, Amores Perros.
The fact that Universal already had some extra features set to go, and then decided to yank them, makes me agree with Coral: I smell a Criterion re-release in a year's time. |
Jeffrey Wells at MoviePoopShoot talked to the director, and this is how Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu answered Wells' question about the lack of extras:
"By the time [Universal Home Video] needed to release the 21 GRAMS DVD, I didn't have enough time to work on it. [Getting] all of the actors' approvals would have taken too much time. Plus I didn't want to rush and deliver something that wasn't worthy. "There will definitively be a second edition [of the 21 GRAMS DVD] with at least some making-of material and deleted scenes, along with some commentaries on them. Thanks for sharing your frustrations with me, which I completely understand." |

I was all set on picking this up over the weekend. Now it looks like I might have to wait with this news. Decisions decisions...

The never-ending cycle of re-release hell continues...
