DVD defects query

This is a fairly common problem. Maybe someone can enlighten me as to its origin.

When playing a DVD, sometimes the frame freezes only to continue a couple of seconds later. Yet when I rewind and replay the segment containing the glitch it plays normally.

Is this the case of the machine lens being in need of cleaning, or is the information programmed onto the DVD "weak" in certain areas, if that problem exists?

This should only happen when you leave the movie paused for a few minutes or more. Basically, your DVD player is just waking back up from 'sleep mode'. If it's something else, I can't really think of another reason why that would happen.

Depends on your the quality of your player. I noticed that on my free Mustek (Free from AT&T) dvd player, but never happened on my Panny XP-30 or my Pioneer player.

P.S. Are you sure you're not referring to a layer change perhaps?

This has happened to me occasionally on my Panasonic RV32, but it only freezes up for about 1 second.
