I have owned this for a few years now. It came out in 2001 as a Two-Disc Special Edition from Kino

I didn't realize it went OOP at some point. This must be a re-release.

Honestly, this one belongs to my wife. She has raved about how it is a wonderful "coming of age" film and that I should watch it sometime, but I have yet to see it.

It has three soundtracks: Russian, French, & English, and is subtitled in 13 languages.

From the back of the box, Extras include interviews with cast & crew; short film chronicle of 20th century Russian culture' Featurette about the 39th anniversary of the Russian Revolution; 2 photo galleries and production stills, and cast/crew filmographies.

You are absolutely right....this disc simply was nowhere to be found for A LONG time...at least not around here. I know I never found it. Is this a re-release...I dont know as I have never had the first one...so I dont know if this has more extra features, better transfer or what......

Cheers,

Kino quietly discontinued this and a couple other titles and then just as quietly re-released them in what appears to be the exact same format.

Got this one too. Some critics felt it was overpraised but it's a very well-made film. I was put off at first by the movie being spread over 2 discs, but the break makes sense when you watch it. The extras are nice.

It's not that long of a movie (140 minutes) so it's surprising that it's split over 2 discs.
