Dark Star news (not much though)
Just spotted this over at R2. Presumably the same in R1, but not much in the way of extras.

Supposedly, R1's getting a special edition with Dan O'Bannon participating. Read the news here:

Not really sure what's wrong with the current DVD that this is necessary, but -- cool. Now -- where the hell are the Carpenter TV movies on disc? Elvis and Someone's Watching Me! - I'm talking 'bout you!

tripps: According to the book "John Carpenter - The Prince of Darkness", it's because O'Bannon ran around saying he secretly directed Dark Star. Which Carpenter didn't much appreciate.

i like the cover for the r2, but would look nice if they removed the light blue text.
i got rid of my r1 when evilbaby posted that news, figured i paid 10.00 for it and traded it in to eb with their 10$ for any movie.

R2 details mention nothing about Carpenter's original cut, which I believe is his preferred one. It's the 68 minute cut before he got more money to add more scenes...
I won't be selling the current disc unless a new one has both versions...

"Elvis: The Movie" is being looked into for release by Dick Clark Productions as they've very interested in getting it out on DVD. "Someone's Watching Me!" is owned by Warner Brothers...a little known TV movie from the 70s will need a good amount of letter writing for WB to take notice.
Last I heard from VCI, "Dark Star" has so issues that need to be settled before anything can progress on a new DVD.
As for Carpenter vs. O'Bannon? Yes it does boil down to issues over "Dark Star" and who did what but I should tell you, if there was ever a movie that should have a co-director, it's "Dark Star" IMO.

Poo, no more news yet on this...
I wish a nice special edition would come one of these days.
I hate it when ego trips hold up movies that people love... See Blade Runner for another example.
