anyone ever bail on a series?

has anybody here, after buying the first few seasons of series, sold what they had and stopped purchasing the series?

with the third season of oz rapidly approaching, i am considering selling my first 2 seasons, and bailing on the purhcase of the season. it is just a very large commitment to throw down 50 to 60 dollars a year for the next 4 years to complete the series. if i hold on to the first 2 seasons, i will feel obligated to buy the remainder of them, as i am a completist. while oz is a good show, i am beginning to think it is just not worth this investment, and that the shows do not hold much repeated viewing value for me anyways. part of me wants to hold on and keep going, if only for the beautiful packaging alone.

besides, there are way too many tv shows available on dvd now to buy them all up. i will complete the sopranos collection, and may finish up curb your enthusiasm, but just cannot see myself buying up mr. show, futurama, the family guy, the simpsons, six feet under, band of brothers, sex and the city, etc...

what are your thoughts? should i ditch my oz discs?

Not completely, although I plan to skip seasons 4-6 of "The Simpsons."

Family Guy was relatively easy to complete since it has only 2 sets. Band of Brothers is even easier, that has only one set.

I've personally stopped collecting some sets for now, such as Friends, since I just haven't had time to even finish the first four that I've bought.

I think some shows do have better replay value than others. The Sopranos is definitely one of those shows. I could see South Park 15 times each. It depends where you are on the Animated shows, I have everything that's come out, so I'll get the last ones.

I do understand how you feel about Oz. I enjoyed the show, and have S1 coming to me from eBay. However, once I watch it again, I'll probably eBay it back. Some shows, once you get past the initial "shock factor", you are okay with not seeing again. Besides, Oz was very much alot of the same thing over and over. Good show overall, but it doesn't have alot of replay value to me.

I don't buy all that many TV shows on DVD, so the ones I buy I plan on completing.

Though I may have to bail on Twin Peaks since it doesn't look like season 2 is ever going to come out.

I bought the first season of Angel because that's all I watched and enjoyed. I'm going to watch the rest of the series through Netflix, but I don't really have any interest in owning it. Nor do I feel obligated to purchase the remaining sets simply because I own the first season.

Twin Peaks... although it may be more appropriate to say the series bailed on me.

BTW, I love the rest of my TV boxsets.

I gave up on Alias; I only got the first season. I was extremely excited when I got Alias, season 1. When I got it home it sat on my bookshelf for about a week. I eventually opened the package and went through the first episode. The video quality was a revelation considering I've been watching the show on cable. What a difference digital makes. I haven't watched an episode since. I don't have any motivation to watch any more episodes.

I gave up on the Transformers after season 2 because I did not feel the episodes had much replay value.

I stopped buying X-Files after Season 5. While there are some episodes I liked a lot in the later seasons, most of my favorite ones are in those first 5 seasons.

I just stopped buying The X-Files after S4. I enjoyed the episodes, but the sets were becoming much too expensive for me. I sold off the sets I had, and might pick them up again if the price is lowered. Othewise, I'm happy just watching them in syndication.

I have the 1st season of Oz because I found it at a good price. The other seasons seem really expensive compared to other TV on DVD so I think I'll pass on them.

I gave up on The Simpsons after S2 because Fox is too damn slow with the dvds and there are plenty of reruns on multiple tv channels.

I have been toying around with the idea of dumping The Simpsons. I mean there are a lot of good episodes I'd like to own, but the wait is ridiculous.

Oz--50+ dollars for 8 episodes, plus I am still not totally convinced HBO will finish the series on DVD.

Strangers With Candy--Cheap enough, but just not very funny IMO.

Man Show--Haven't bought V2 yet, not sure about Stone Stanley's committment to see the series through (at least the Adam/Jimmy years)

If the Simpsons doesn't get it's act together, I may stop collecting that as well.

I bailed on Star Trek: THE NEXT GENERATION after four seasons because it seems like everytime I get an extra $100 for DVDs, I'd rather spend it on a half dozen titles than one Season Set...I plan to finish these sooner or later, though!

I bailed after one season of Sex and the City because I hated it. Just not my taste.

I bailed on Stargate SG1 after only two of the single discs. I just didn't like them as much as I thought I did. I much prefer the Ultimate edition of the movie.

And I've only got about 1/4 of the ST TOS discs. I think you know why. I'm going to see if the box sets have any decent extras, and if not, I'll buy up all the single discs that people are sure to sell off.

Season three and four are both coming out this year (S4 is 16 episodes instead of 8). All the seasons will almost assuredly come out.

Although I respect your opinion, I am a bit surprised by this. To me, this is when the series peaked. Were you more a fan of Seasons 1-3 or 7 and later? Just curious...

Why do you people feel the need to stop collecting The Simpsons just because they take awhile?

They're great sets, and it's not like it burns a hole in your wallet, since it's one set a year.
