Plans for custom DVD storage rack?

I was wondering if anyone had created plans for a custom DVD storage rack, and would like to share, or sell a copy?

Thanks in advance.

Numanoid 02-08-04 05:35 PM

I'll sell you these plans for $10:

How about this plan?

If there is a rag shop in your area, check out the wood work there. You can put something together.

This is bar *none* the funniest thing I've ever seen on the forum!

OMG - this is the funniest thing I've seen in a long long time!! I can't stop laughing.

Someone made a custom rack out of PVC pipe, and the plans were either on this forum, or the hardware forum.

DavidH 02-08-04 08:54 PM

That's just about as funny as the Spider-Man cover.

ckolchak 02-08-04 08:59 PM

it helps if you identify your needs
-how many dvds do you want it to hold
-how much space do you have-
-whats your asthetic preference?
would you prefer something low and wide or thinner but floor to ceiling?
-do you want the cases exposed or would you rather have a closed cabinet?

There is one problem, with these: anything that's wider than a standard keepcase will get smushed by the lid (i.e. Boogie Nights or Pulp Fiction Special Eds)

Other than that, these are excellent. Perfect for Keep Cases, and they stack wonderfully.

Here's the link provided by the maker of the PVC Shelving that littlefuzzy mentioned. I've had this bookmarked for some time, waiting to move to my new apartment where I plan on making one of these.

Thank you to the designer for keeping this page up!

I just found the link to the PVC DVD RACK the other day and was already planning to go to Menards or Home Depot tommorrow to pick up all the PVC!!! I can't wait... No more DVD's on the floor! :)

Tarantino, if I may ask where can one find plastic storage tubs like the ones pictured? I could use a bunch of those to store most of my DVD's which I'm embarrased to admit are presently kept in paper bags.

HistoryProf 02-09-04 11:01 PM

while Numanoid's plans are indeed the funniest thing i've seen in a while, i don't think you're going to have much luck getting "plans" from anyone. I built a shelf, and am almost done with a newer, bigger one....but the plans are all in my head and I just kind of figure it out - maybe do a quick little sketch just to keep track of how many feet of boards i need and stuff.....do a search and look through the "post pictures of your home theater" threads....people often post pics of stuff they made.....and here's a recent one from otterland....

here's the most recent HT pics thread...which links to part 2, which links to part one....enjoy!

Wal-Mart, K-Mart (I've gotten them both places), almost any Department store would probably carry them. Rubbermaid Photo Storage Boxes.

Thank you. I try to check that thread, but missed that post. That is something that I think could be done fairly easily.

You couldn't afford a cardboard box or two?

seriously...i'd love to see a picture of that....are they just on the floor? in the closet? why paper bags? :)

namlook 02-10-04 11:03 PM

It's kind of fun to stack DVD's in a decorative way - like a house of cards. It looks cool too and no need for expensive shelving. :)

leecrane 02-11-04 12:13 AM

Thanks Buck for the info - I went to 2 Kmarts today, a Target and a Walmart and none had those particular type of storage boxes, although I did find some generic Rubbermaid ones that could have worked. But I want them all to be consistent and like the look of the ones pictured, so I might just order them online.

What do you think I'm rich Brizz, cardboard boxes are way too expensive! No, actually, the sad truth is I'm just lazy and never got around to organizing my collection better...

I would like to eventually get one or two large DVD racks to keep upstairs out of view, but there are space issues. For now I'd at least like to move most of my collection into plastic bins so I can move them around, store them away, etc.

Here's a pic of how they are presently kept:
Embarassing but true

These are upstairs in my bedroom. I have more stored this way in my closet. My favorite DVD's are displayed in the living room with an inexpensive shelving unit bought from Home Depot.

leecrane 02-11-04 12:22 AM

namlook -

atari2600 02-11-04 12:49 AM

how can you tell which dvd is in which bag? and it doenst make for easy access to the ones at the bottom.

Do you mind sharing the link with us here? I have nearly 900 DVD's and I need a lightweight large storage solution like the PVC plans appears to be.

Never mind I notice the link in the post above yours!

Why are you embarassed? The paper bag storage system has a certain understated charm. It makes a bold statement without being too flamboyant.

Where did you get those bags? Ralphs?

If you do, would you mind posting how much you pay for materials? I could use some extra storage space myself, but moneys a bit tight. This looks like it might be a pretty cheap solution.

at least its better than being scattered around bedroom floor, which is wat mine were up until a coupla mths ago, now i have cute lil Mesh DVD Rack from Argos :)

Qui Gon Jim 02-11-04 11:41 AM

Here is what I did:

I have three of these shelves, except in chrome:
http://www.metro.com/ftp/Consumer/smbkcse.jpg

I then assembled smaller shelves in an "h' formation using 3/4"x4" oak that runs the length of the shelf. One row of DVDs fits on the "top" of the H, and the other infront on the actual metal shelf. I have 3 units, and currently there are six shelves of 9 filled with DVDs, 4 filled with books and 2 with collectibles (but they will change to DVDs very soon.

These shelves are heavy duty and are on wheels and are very easy to move around. I will post some pics when I get home...

Furious 02-11-04 03:05 PM

Go to Ikea, buy the Gorm rack. The 30 cm deep shelves will hold 2 rows of dvds, about 100 per shelf or so, and 7 shelves can be fitted. Add in some back and side pieces of 1 x 4 and your done. If you have a few tools (drill, screwdriver, ratchet, sand paper), cost is around 50 bucks or less. Will be a bit of labor to sand it down and drill a few holes but it's cheap, holds a ton, can be painted, can be expanded, and can be taken apart easily if moving. You could always build from scratch with pine 1 x 4 as well. Home Depot could cut everything to size.

I just got all the material and started building it last night!!! Total was about $52 before tax! I also bought some spraypaint that bonds to PVC, those were about $4 a can. Should turn out pretty nice. I'll post pics when I get it done!

Big Boy Laroux 02-11-04 03:26 PM

i just spend the 25 bucks for the racks from officemax. i got one on sale around thanksgiving for like 15 bucks.

shelland 02-11-04 06:34 PM

Here's a thread currently taking place at Home Theater Spot.

I'm too lazy to type it again, so here's what I posted there for my solution: :D

I had a "half wall" with a shelf on top of it, and removed the panelling below the shelf. I actually built a "frame" around the studs with 1x4's. I then drilled holes on the sides and put pegs in them, so that the shelves are adjustable.

Here's a pic . We actually rent, and the landlord is going to paint the whole basement, so eventually, the walls and shelves will be the same color. This pic shows them only primed. Plus there's another 1 1/2 shelves full of DVDs since this was taken...

jasonnaper 02-11-04 09:47 PM

Thats right... hide those VHS movies from us... :)

Check out the official site (http://www.rubbermaid.com) and they might offer some options or a store locator.

Numanoid shelf plans + leecrane storage system = me crapping my pants from laughing. Seriously.... except for the crapping part.
