Wal-Mart only has full screen Planet of the Apes??

Went to Wal-Mart to pick up the 35th Anniversary Planet of the Apes today and all they had was the Full Screen version WTF?!?!

Anyone able to find widescreen at Wal-Mart?

Quake1028 02-03-04 10:40 AM

All I saw were P&S copies also.

They tend to do this. Most people who shop at Walmart, not all, prefer the Pan & Scan format. This is changing as more and more people are buying Widescreen TVs.

Maxflier 02-03-04 11:19 AM

They usually carry both so you can choose for yourself,I don't undrestand why they only offer POS errr i mean P&S for this one.

DonnachaOne 02-03-04 11:34 AM

Don't shop at Wal-Mart unless you know for a fact that it is carryong the widescreen version. This practice of theirs happens more often that you think.

From my experience, the Walmart I go to usually carries both versions, except they only carried the fullscreen version of There's Something About Mary when it was re-released this summer. Both TSAM and POTA are Fox titles, so I wonder if there is a connection. Still, all new (from theater) Fox titles are readily available in widescreen and fullscreen at Walmart so I have no real answer for you. Maybe its just a catalog title thing, or maybe it's just a coincidence.

Amen to that. I can't stand how a retailer like that would only sell the Full Screen versions. Makes me sick.

It doesn't surprise me in the least. When I picked up "Open Range" a couple of weeks ago at WalMart, the clerk who had to take it out of a locked case warned me that the movie came only in the widescreen version and that there was no fullscreen available. I gave him you got to be kidding me look and said "widescreen is the only way I would have purchased the movie". He then commented that most of their customers don't have widescreen tv's and prefer the fullscreen movies.

So there you have it. Joe six-pack has a retail sponser after all and it's going to take a long time to change that mindset.

What the **** is the point of putting out a pan-and-scan version of this anyways?? Let them watch the old Magnetic Video VHS!!

Because alot of people have returned the WS DVDs, I'm sure WMart has saved tons of DVDs from being returned by giving the customer a little bit more info. And if FS is what the customer wants, then that is what the should buy.

I went to a local Wal-Mart over lunch to look for the POTA:35th Ann. Ed. They had a bunch for the very low price of $13.86. As I was looking through the stacks I quickly realized that they had only full screen copies. As I was looking, one of those very helpful Wal-Mart employees said that they were indeed all full screen copies. I asked him why they weren't carrying the widescreen version. He said it wasn't released in widescreen. I told him that I knew for a fact that it was. He just looked at me with a blank stare. I told him I'd go and buy the widescreen version elsewhere which I did(although not for the incredible price of $13.86).

QuiGonJosh 02-03-04 12:27 PM

All I saw were POS copies...oh excuse me...Pan&Scan...

Darryl 02-03-04 12:35 PM

This memo just in to Wal-Mart from Chuck Heston...

"Damn you!"

Alan Smithee 02-03-04 12:35 PM

But it's an OLD movie! Joe 6 Pack doesn't buy old movies (anything more than 10 years old!)

flix1 02-03-04 12:38 PM

What was their price for POTA (either version)?

Maxflier 02-03-04 12:54 PM

Wow $13.86....the Walmart here is selling it for $19.96,they never put new releases on sale.Maybe from now on I will travel to Best Buy no matter what.

Julie Walker 02-03-04 12:57 PM

Wait a minute; I did not see ANY P&S listings on various online retailers. So what gives?

I will go check again, though everytime I looked up the new edition. The old release & the WS new release is all that would show up.

If I can get my car repaired today,I may swing by WM for alittle looksee myself. This just pisses me off(just like Columbias sneaky P&S only releases in identical packaging).

Julie Walker 02-03-04 01:15 PM

Ok checked a couple sites & now see a P&S version listed.

wm lopez 02-03-04 02:12 PM

They should put a display with a scene from the movie in widescreen & full screen. And that way some people will see the light.
After talking to some people in stores they think because their t.v. is sqaure the widescreen movie isn't being played right on their t.v.

daniel18 02-03-04 02:29 PM

I ****ing hate Sprawl*Mart. I try to stay as far away from that place as possible.

Julie Walker 02-03-04 02:46 PM

It would be interesting to question them with "Why do you carry WS tvs & yet still promote pan & scan where you are loosing picture instead of gaining?" ;)

Maxflier 02-03-04 03:03 PM

Well if I asked the people who work in electronics at the Wal-Mart here that, they would be like "um...what".

sataniko 02-03-04 03:43 PM

I know exactly what you mean, last year I was looking for the scarface gift set all over Jersey, and I decided to stop at a Walmart on my way to a couple of other stores, "um...what" was the answer I got from the guy at electronics. He had no idea of what I was talking about.

Steve Phillips 02-03-04 03:49 PM

I remember how thrilled I was when the film was released on Laser, because I could finally see the whole picture. The APES movies really suffer in panned and scanned prints.

Anyone who buys this film in bastardized form should be banished to the forbidden zone.

layth1 02-03-04 04:00 PM

My walmart was also selling it for $19.96 Pan & Scan only :( So I'm gonna look else where to see if I can find the Widescreen version.
