Below - awesome, creepy flick. It has scares that result from atmosphere, not from musical cues or simple "Boo!"-type scares.

The 'burbs - I always thought this movie was underrated, I think it's Tom Hanks' best comedy performance.

The Exorcist III - can be had for under $6, very cool movie with nice scares. Who knew old ladies walking on the ceiling could be so creepy?

Firefly - I know many people in this forum know how great this show is, but many more don't. Folks who like intelligent sci-fi with great characterizations need to check out this TV show on DVD. My wife LOVES it, and she normally hates sci-fi. It was cancelled WAY before it should have been.

Frailty - another flick with great spooky atmosphere. However, I seem to be the only one that likes it in my circle of friends (one even calls it blasphemous)

The Ice Storm - under $6 at Walmart. A great movie that I have found many folks don't know about. Tragic drama set in the 70's.

The Man Who Wasn't There - great Coen Brothers flick, modern attempt at period film-noir (does that make sense? )

Punch-Drunk Love - I never heard a lot of hoopla about this movie but Adam Sandler's neurotic loser kept me entranced when I bought it used recently. Much better than his moronic comedies (I do like Happy Gilmore, however )

Rushmore - another movie that I find very few people know about (except on here where it's well-known). A comedy based on wit and intelligence instead of sex & toilet jokes - which are sometimes good in their own right )

Session 9 - one of my favorite scary movies. Again, the scares are atmospheric instead of cats jumping into frame and sudden loud music. It builds a feeling of dread that isn't entirely released at the end.

Stir of Echoes - overshadowed by The Sixth Sense but just as good. Kevin Bacon driven to digging up his backyard much like Richard Dreyfuss is driven to build a mountain out of mashed potatoes.

Wendigo - another movie many don't like but I found interesting. Slow-paced but with good performances, leaving you wondering if there really was a Wendigo @ times.

I am a 'burbs fan as well. Actually saw it in the theatre back in the day. I don't know if I would go so far as to say best comedic performance ( would reserve that for The Money Pit), but still a great film.

Where is your signaure quotation from?

There have been several variations of that quote, but seeing Christmas Vacation a few weeks ago made me think about putting that as my new sig.

Aunt Bethany: [Sniff Sniff] What's that sound?
Uncle Lewis: You couldn't hear a dump truck driving through a nitroglycerin plant

Eh, I've always liked The 'Burbs more than The Money Pit, just a personal opinion.

I also want to add Being John Malkovich to that list. Such a strange premise but handled in a way that makes it actually believable. Cameron Diaz's only good performance IMHO.

Ah, Baron Munchausen, forgot to include that one. I thought of adding Time Bandits but it seems to be gaining popularity thanks to Anchor Bay. I remember when the Evil Dead movies used to be underrated and known only among gore-hounds. Nearly everyone I know that has an average-sized collection has a copy of one of the multiple versions of those flicks.

I think that The Fisher King is the most criminally underappreciated movie of all-time.

Elizabeth. Released the same year as Shakespeare in Love, the Thin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan and Life is Beautiful, so it never had a chance. The movie is outstanding, Cate Blanchett is absolutely amazing as Elizabeth and the DVD isn't lacking. Absolutely one of my favorite discs.

I agree with Elizabeth and Frequency . I'll add Courage Under Fire, a film I really liked that gets little respect.

Will also have to say yes to 25th Hour, The Bourne Identity, and One Hour Photo since those are in my collection and they are some pretty good movies that never got too much attention. Might as well add one myslef to the list but ....

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai.

It is a cult classic and ever since i owned the betamax release, i loved it (wish i did not get rid of the beta collection...)

Aboslutely love that movie & DVD. Rush is amazing in the movie as well.

I'll add Fishing With John: Criterion Collection as one of my favorite underrated DVDs. Especially in this forum loaded with criterion groupies, I never see anyone here talk about this one. One of my all-time favorite DVDs I own. Extremely quirky & original.

"Mallrats"....I love that movie. I honestly cannot get enough of it.

Brodie is my favorite character from the Jersey "Trilogy" movies.

While not quite as underrated as "Drop Dead Gorgeous" i will add "Last Action Hero" as a close 2nd. Fine, fine parody/satire on Ah-nuld and his movies but i admit it falls apart during the 2nd half.

Hmm..

Ed Wood?
Suicide Kings?
Fear and Loathing : In Las Vegas?
What's Eating Gilbert Grape?
Session 9?
The Virgin Suicides?
Jackie Brown?

I can't narrow it down to one. The above are some films that most people either have not seen for whatever reason or do not apperciate..Take for example...

Ed Wood - It's a black and white film about a cult director. Not many mainstream people have seen this or care for it.

Suicide Kings - I remember reading how bad this was and hearing word of mouth on how bad it was, but for some reason I thought it was great.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Weird. Surreal and had great cameo's , yet not a lot of mainstream people have seen it.

What's eating Gilbert Grape? - Early in Depp's career and Lenardo's career. Most have seen it, but few love it.

Session 9 - Low budget, for the most part and under-hyped. However, it was one of the few original horror films I've enjoyed.

The Virgin Suicides - I know quite a few who have saw this and said it was too depressing. I thought it was brilliant.

Jackie Brown - Yes, most have seen this, but out of Tarinto's four films, I have to say this is my second favorite, behind Resivor Dogs.
