Unconfirmed Date for Return of the King

At work today(Blockbusters) I had to look up Fellowship for a customer to see when it was due back. I noticed our computers had a three new listings for Return of the King( DVD WS, DVD FS and VHS) with a streetdate listing of 5/25/04.

Can anyone confirm this date?

I work in a Fred Meyer (big boxstore, a la Wal*Mart but smaller) and that's been the posted release date since Christmas. It'd make sense since PJ isn't occupied with another movie due in December, just the EE.

Not really interested in the theatrical, but if this holds true then the Extended should come sooner. Yay.

I don't think the extended cut will come out any sooner. I saw an article over at USA Today that said the theatrical cut will come out May/June and that the extended version (which will be approximately 4hrs 10 minutes) will still come out in November.

I have a feeling we're gonna see a new LOTR DVD around the Christmas shopping season. Sucks, but hey, it's good business.

The theatrical cut will do 'til then. This movie was definitely worth it.

^^^ Because they're two different movies, with two different sets of features. Pretty simple really.

Not to me. As someone else said, the theatrical version is just a 3 hour 20 minute trailer for the EE.

What I just read is that we can expect the theatrical cut in June, followed by the EE in November. Also, the word is that the EE will be about 4 hours and 10 minutes long.

I can't wait for the extended edition of Return of The King.

oh and I'm not sure what they have planned but I have the Return of the King video game and when you beat the game the last thing they show it says 'Lord of The Rings Trilogy, coming 2004" or something.

LOL, good one. I never thought of it that way. I'll be waiting for the "real" movie, aka EE, again this time.

And how are the EEs NOT Peter Jackson's movies?? Especially considering all the love and lavish attention he personally puts into them??

The Theatrical is a worthy movie - remember, it's the theatrical versions that make all of the box office money and earn all of the critical hosannas. It's the theatrical versions that we first heard about and expected to see, and it's the theatrical version that may or may not win the Academy Award for Best Picture this year. I love the Extended Editions, and I have them, but I also really loved the theatrical version of The Return of the King in particular. To call the theatrical version a mere "trailer" for the EE is just ridiculous, no matter how outstanding the EEs are. Just ask yourself this: if Peter Jackson did not believe in tweaking with movies and releasing extended versions, what would you be buying?

Of course.

But, just ask yourself this: what if time was not of consideration? The extended versions would quite possibly be the theatrical versions.

Doesn't really matter to me one way or the other. I much prefer the extended versions as I don't even own the theatrical versions.

Since this was on the video game, doesn't common sense dictate that they're talking about a video game trilogy package... and not DVDs?

Actually, it's a brand new video game based on the events in the LOTR trilogy. As for what events will be depicted in the new video game, I don't know.

I'd love to see ROTK arrive in May, but my gut instinct still tells me it's going to come out in August (or whenever day Simpsons season 4 comes out ).

As mentioned earlier, here is the USA Today article posted after they interviewed PJ. In it, they verify that the theatrical version will be release in May/June, not August.

wondering if they will come up with another gift set for the ROTK EE in November? Perhaps even an ultimate gift set of all 3 EE's together with yet another statue and a bonus DVD?!
