I'm there, dude. You should follow it up with the DVD compression companies that get displayed after the movie credits.

The "vast majority of DVD enthusiasts" don't have the type of disposable income to obsessively snatch up every last DVD with a spine number and collectable booklet. You're holding up the actions of an obsessive minority as representative of the majority, and that's a dangerous row to hoe, my friend.
Just because three or four guys proudly proclaim that they have a complete set of the Criterion Collection DVDs doesn't mean that everybody who buys one is in that same cubby hole.

I can't imagine collecting titles just because a certain company releases it. Even if they have a good reputation, chances are they will eventually throw a few titles at buyers who normally wouldn't purchase these films if their name wasn't associated with it.

Wow. It doesn't bother me at all that some collect DVD just for the sake of collecting (Criterion). I personally am borderline on this.
I will buy a film I really enjoy (Jaws), but then end up buying all the subpar sequels (Jaws 2-4) just for the sake of having all of them. If Criterion released more films that interested me then perhaps I would do the same with those.
But seeing as how some OOP Criterions are way beyond my proce range I will probably not be getting into those.
I don't care how people collect or arrange their collection. To me, if someone gets bent for another member talking about their Criterion collection it has to be based on jealousy, IMO.

My the lengths some people go around here to sound intelligent and holier-than-thou. Once again - this is a forum for people who love dvds and film....why hang around if you are annoyed by those people?

Hmm. Is collecting books ok? How about wine? Art? Glass figurines? Stamps? Baseball cards? Clothes? Cars? Autographs?
Are you just supposed to not do anything like this and collect money instead? Your children will love you when you die and they get the money you never spent.
Personally, I'm collecting bills and late notices. It's fun for the whole family, cheap, easy and you can use them to wallpaper your living room!

Those were a lot of big words fettered with a number of oh-so-casually mentioned intelligensia references. Trying a little hard to proove your smarts and defend yourself? Maybe I am a Durden clone (clever by the way). I'm a freshman at Brown who lived in Boulder for 12 years, the prim-o demographic for anti-establishment, stir-the-pot sentiment.
As for busting the 99% barrier: How many people here have watched every dvd in their collection more than 5 times, thus justifying a purchase over a rental? I'm not trying to be hostile. In my experience however, most people who own more than 100 dvds are pack-rats in general, and take more pride in their collection than they do pleasure from watching films.

Big words? What, you mean, like, sociology?
Here's the thing -- and it echoes my previous points: one doesn't need to watch a DVD "more than 5 times" in order to justify it as a purchase over a rental (incidentally, where are you buying your DVDs that you're spending $25 a pop?). The criteria for "justifying a purchase" changes from person to person, and changes further from one set of circumstances to the next.
What you've decided, however, is that anyone who doesn't meet the limited criteria that would justify a purchase for you must necessarily prefer the gathering of discs -- the act of owning -- to the watching (and, by implication, the enjoyment) of the films themselves. Which doesn't follow, of course -- but which does, as a species of argument, bespeak the kind of wannabe-Yippie, anti-bourgeois communalist aesthetic I suspect is overdetermined among those who self-identify as fledgling Ivy Leaguers. (By the way, how much is a year at Brown going for these days...?)
Me, I like to revisit a film a second time with commentary about a week or so after I first watch it. If there's more than one commentary track on the disc, I'll save those additional tracks until a week after I watch the flick the next time. Which, if you're keeping up, you'll note is 4 viewings (or, in terms you can relate to, 4 potential rentals) -- more than justification enough for me to purchase the disc. Then there's the convenience of having the title in hand, the gratification of not having to give Blockbuster a dime of my money, the joy of experiencing the theater experience in my home, etc., etc...
(Oh, and no: I don't believe I'm "trying a little hard" to "proove" [sic] my smarts. It just comes naturally to me
)

That said, your points are ridiculously illogical. since when does watching a movie five times serve as the standard for making a purchase "worth it"? if a new release costs $3, and I have to watch it in a set time period, and risk late fees, and drive to the rental store to rent it and return it, there's a whole variation of "costs" that are included if you really want to go that route. Meanwhile, I get a bunch of movies for around $7 or $8 a piece via Columbia House and have them at my disposal to watch whenever I want. And then there's the factor of local rental places not carrying many many films I want to see - such as catalog releases and foriegn films. So now what?
But I suppose your admission of being an 18 year old freshman at a lower tiered Ivy League school makes everything perfectly clear here.....I must again ask again, however: What on earth are you doing on a forum for dvd and film enthusiasts? As you are obviously neither....Personally, I have derived much pleasure from watching Rififi, Le Cercle Rouge, Gattaca, Election, and Wages of Fear in the last week....none of which resulted from caressing the cases, but from watching the films! You couldn't be more uninformed or delusional on this topic....but I don't suspect you'll realize that for at least another decade....don't worry though, you'll figure it all out eventually, you know, once you get out of college and start earning your real education.

Or don't. Instead, just make sweeping generalizations, pat yourself on the back for being "controversial", and head back to your PlayStation 2.
