The non-Leon release is NOT censored or recut for the American market. It is the final version that played everywhere. Luc Besson then took some time after the release and reinstated some scenes that he had personally cut out (read: not forced to by the evil MPAA). Why does eveyone assume that with two versions, there had to have been something censored somewhere?

Because it's cool, that's why!!

The "US Cut" was what was released EVERYWHERE in 1994.

The Int'l Version was made by Besson as a "gift to his fans" in France in 1996. He has stated in several interviews that he still considers the original cut he made his final version.

As I recall, it wasn't the picture that was the issue on the Superbit version. Rather they used the wrong soundtrack. It's supposed to be inferior to the non-Superbit version. As I recall there was initially a problem that was fixed in later releases, but the Superbit used the original track with whatever flaws it was supposed to have had.

I've still not seen this movie, but it's high on my list of things to get. And when the time comes, I'm getting the uncut version like everyone else.

The picture is not worse, but it is definitely not any better. I've played key scenes on my 50" LCD, so I can personally attest to this. In addition, the DTS track is supposedly no improvement over the Dolby track. So, it's really not worth the upgrade (or rather the lack thereof). Also, you lose all the additional supplements. Hope the info helps!

No doubt Leon is better than the US cut. The added scenes improved the picture so much that it's now in my top 10 movies of all time. I just didn't want that movie to end, which rarely happens when I watch a film. Also it brought a lot more quirky charm, and warmnes to the flick. I had felt that I know these characters much more than the US cut.
