For the 39.99 one, either Grand Illusion or, although it's not in your list, I would also suggest you consider Ikiru. It's considered by some to be Kurosawa's best film. It also has two great documentaries and a superb commentary from Stephen Prince, a Kursosawa biographer.

For the two lesser valued Bob Le Flambeur and Maitresse.

Where's the followup? Did you decide? Have you seen them yet? Are you happy with your choices?

Inquirying minds need to know....

I actually haven't placed the order yet - but I did get Grand Illusion from the Library and watched that a few nights ago - and that cinched the final decision. Of course, then I went to DVDPlanet to place the order and GI was out of stock

So as of now I have Andrei Rublev, Diabolique, Bob Le Flambeur, and Coup de Torchon in my shopping cart. I'm going to give them till tomorrow to get GI back in stock - and of course, today AR was changed to "low stock" so i'll probably get stuck there too.....I know I could do separate orders, but I prefer to do it all in one chunk. However, I did succumb and get Cranes Are Flying (not one of the choices here, but high on my wishlist and got a good price) off of ebay - very painless with $100 sitting in my paypal account....it's almost like it was free!

Anyway, I really appreciate everyone's input....I've found myself scouring the shelves trying to find more stuff to sell off to fill out the CC wishlist

Ok, Grand Illusion came back in stock today, but Andrei Rublev went out of stock...so the final order was:

Grand Illusion
Bob Le Flambeur
Coup de Torchon
Diabolique
That Obscure Object of Desire

As you can tell, I went a tad beyond my initial intent, but a couple more sales were more profitable thant I hoped and he $$ was there so why the hell not! that will be one fun package to open for sure. And The Cranes Are Flying arrived today, so i'm anxiously awaiting giving that a view tomorrow night.

Excellent choices, all. I think you'll be very happy with these discs.

Thanks FFS - you know, I almost emailed you personally regarding my flippantly ill-informed comments a month or two ago in a criterion thread that got your dander up.....I think you know the one. Let's just say that i've seen the light, so to speak...and that exchange was directly responsible for me revisiting our vichy friends with a newly opened mind

I've only seen Diabolique so I'll just recommend that one. Out of all other movies you mentioned, I only heard of Grand Illusion.
