I think it would be a good idea to have all DVDs auto-play. If you want to go to the menu for any reason, then press the menu button. We bought my grandma a DVD player last Christmas and she can't figure the thing out, much less figure out how to push the Input button on the remote to switch from TV to DVD. Plus it would make watching DVDs easier for my niece. I live with my dad, my grandma, and 2 of my 4 sisters. I am the ONLY one in the house that even cares about sound and picture options and special features. I myself normally just watch the movie first, then if I like it will watch the special features by myself later. While I do like the idea of the menu coming up first; in effect postponing the movie so I can go to the bathroom, etc. But I think in the long run the movie starting by itself, pressing Menu for those that want to once the movie starts is the better way to go.

I HATE autoplaying DVDs. Sometimes I will put in a dvd and then go make popcorn or get a snack or something - I do not want to return to see that the movie is already 5 minutes in...

No DVDs other than these specific childrens discs should be autoplaying - as others have said, its a giant step back.

Wish they would do this for DVDs for adults too.
Many adult titles already do this (so I hear), so they already ARE doing this for adults! It's advertised on many Sunshine titles as "autoplay" and they also have "auto-repeat" as well, mostly on the >/=4hr selections.

You'll be glad to know I'm keeping away from the "hands free operation" references today.

Ummm, right. I didn't mean that kind of "adult" DVD...

I'd like to see you be able to define defaults for DVD playback (soundtrack language, surround track, subtitles, etc.) inside the DVD player and then inserting a DVD would play the movie automatically with the defaults you defined. At the very least have "Play Movie" the default choice on a menu and just press "Enter" or "Play" on the remote to start the movie (I believe most DVD's do this now). And please, if you're going to show the menu then let it be the first thing shown...no previews or FBI warnings to get in the way.
Excellent idea! Perhaps the DVD Forum should consider writing this type of setup into the spec for HD-DVD.
